UYL report: Chelsea 0 Barcelona 3
Mon 23 Apr 2018
Our Under-19s' return to the UEFA Youth League fell at the final hurdle in
Switzerland with the young Blues’ best play coming too late in the game.
After a year away, two-time champions Chelsea had progressed to play
Barcelona thanks to a strong group stage and big knockout wins against
Feyenoord and Real Madrid, before Friday's semi-final penalty shoot-out
over Porto.
Joe Edwards' side had to come from behind in that match but that proved
not possible today after Barcelona had taken the lead through Alejandro
Marques close on half-an-hour, and added a second from the same player
shortly after half-time, reward for their control at that stage.
Chelsea improved, with a Callum Hudson-Odoi free-kick against the post the
closest we came to scoring. A Charlie Brown effort clipped the woodwork
too but we were looking for a consolation goal by the time Abel Ruiz
netted in stoppage time to complete Barcelona's second UEFA Youth League
triumph.
When the teams lined up at the start, there were two changes from our
dramatic victory against Porto three days previously, both prompted by
suspension. Trevoh Chalobah missed out after picking up his third booking
of the competition on Friday and was replaced at the back by Marc Guehi,
and Jacob Maddox came in for Conor Gallagher in midfield.
Edwards opted for a slightly different shape too as he tweaked his side's
system for the challenge of facing Barcelona's possession-focused
approach, with Hudson-Odoi pushed higher to join Daishawn Redan up front
and Harvey St Clair deployed in the number 10 role.
Jamie Cumming proved the semi-final hero against Porto by saving three
spot-kicks and the goalkeeper retained his place between the posts behind
a back-three of captain Josh Grant, Dujon Sterling and Guehi. Reece James
and Juan Castillo continued in the wing-back positions, while Luke
McCormick joined the returning Maddox in the middle of the pitch.
Chelsea had to do the greater share of the defending in the opening 10
minutes, successful in not allowing Barcelona any sights at goal, and then
James got away down the Chelsea right and wasted no time in sending over a
low, curling cross that Hudson-Odoi was close to turning on target. That
proved to be our most promising attack of the first half.
There was an escape for the young Blues when Cumming under-hit a clearance
from inside his penalty area straight at a Barcelona player, who could
only return the ball straight to the keeper. A deflected shot from
Alejandro Marques with 26 minutes played did have Cumming more concerned
but it dropped onto the roof of the Chelsea net.
Dujon Sterling was booked when his foul stopped the Spaniards' next
attack. The Chelsea wall comfortably blocked the free-kick but we needed a
firmer foothold in the game, and indeed Barcelona capitalised on their
greater share of possession when they opened the scoring on 32 minutes.
Abel Ruiz with a diagonal run from the left was the architect having
battled free. He had the pace to stay in front of his chasers before
chipping over a cross from which Marques headed in from close range.
Cumming saved from Carles Perez before the interval but he could do
nothing five minutes after the restart when Marc Guehi lost his feet under
challenge from Marques who was left free to score his and his team's
second of the game.
Going 2-0 down was the spur for Chelsea's best attacking phase of the
game, and on 55 minutes Luke McCormick was only inches away from pulling a
goal back with a well-executed overhead kick.
James' surging run soon after was ended by a foul. Hudson-Odoi's free-kick
found a gap in the defensive wall but bounced back off the post. The
response to the second goal had been good but it was looking like it was
not to be our day.
McCormick sliced a shot after substitute George McEachran had reached the
byline and cut the ball back. McEachran had come on as a sub with the team
shape switching to a back-four.
Chelsea continued to push forward but Castillo's delivery into the
six-yard box was too close to the keeper and St Clair hooked a shot the
wrong side of the near post.
With eight minutes left on the clock, we saw Hudson-Odoi at his best when
he created a chance for Charlie Brown but the substitute's header skimmed
the top of the crossbar. Instead it was the Spanish side who scored again
when Ruiz swept in a late, low shot.
For our Academy, attention switches to another chance for silverware with
the FA Youth Cup final first leg at Stamford Bridge coming as quickly as
this Friday.

UYL reaction: Feeling the pain
Tue 24 Apr 2018
Joe Edwards reflected with brutal honesty after our Under-19s were beaten
by Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League final. Clearly frustrated at a
below-par performance, the manager urged his young players to feel the
pain of losing, remember it and learn from the experience.
Having demonstrated resilience to fight back from 2-1 down with 10 minutes
remaining in the semi-final against Porto, then win on penalties, the
Blues were far from their best against the Spaniards at the Colvoray
Stadium and eventually went down 3-0.
'It's devastating and frustrating,' said a disappointed Edwards after the
game. 'It's a good achievement in itself to reach the final of this
competition, whether you win or lose, and there's no shame in losing a
final to Barcelona as long as you've given a good account of yourselves
and played near your best. Unfortunately, we can't say we've done that.
'This is a big stage for us and when you get Chelsea and Barcelona in a
final, people want to see what the players are capable of and how the
teams can play. It's frustrating because we know we've got so much more
than that. Throughout the competition we've played some fantastic football
and scored some great goals – today is a bad day for all those things to
desert you but it's happened and we've been punished.
'We had a message from Frank Lampard before the game, saying that once you
get to a final and you don't win, you wish you hadn't got there because it
hurts so much. Frank is right but we have to take that feeling because it
was a bad day for us.'
Our youngsters struggled to settle into the contest, hassled in possession
by Barcelona's pressing game and then unable to get close enough to the
Catalans on the ball. Alejandro Marques headed in the opener after
half-hour before doubling the lead seven minutes into the second half,
while Abel Ruiz added a late third in stoppage time.
Callum Hudson-Odoi did hit the post with a free-kick and substitute
striker Charlie Brown's header bounced off the top of the crossbar, both
while the score was 2-0, but Edwards admitted his side were beaten on the
day by the better team.
'This is a time to be honest and we didn't get anywhere near the standards
we normally set for ourselves,' he continued. 'We weren't able to match
Barcelona or cause them any problems. Physically we didn't look as sharp
as them, on the ball we were poor and Barcelona really punished us.
'It's one of those days but, as a coach, I don't really know why we didn't
turn up. We looked a yard off everything, looked like we couldn't handle
the ball, which is so unusual for us. There was no rhythm or quality in
possession and against a team of their ability, you get punished for that
badly.'
With so many Chelsea players on the field accustomed to lifting silverware
with club and country, the unusual feeling of defeat was particularly
painful. However, there is now an opportunity for these young players to
learn and use the hurt as motivation over the coming weeks, months and
years of their careers.
'We're a club and an academy that's used to winning so we're incredibly
disappointed with ourselves and how we've played in the game when it
mattered most,' Edwards continued. 'It doesn't feel nice at all but there
have been plenty of occasions where we've been the ones jumping around the
pitch with the trophy so now we have to feel the pain of losing.
'Hopefully, we can use this experience so that the next time these players
have this sort of opportunity, they make sure it doesn't happen again. The
boys will learn from it, we'll make sure of that, and we'll be back.'
The opportunity to right some wrongs comes round quickly for our
youngsters with the FA Youth Cup final first leg at Stamford Bridge this
Friday 27 April, kick-off 7.45pm. Tickets are currently on general sale
priced at just £5 for adults and £3 for concessions and will go off sale
on Friday at 4pm. Click here to purchase tickets. Tickets for the second
leg at the Emirates Stadium next Monday 30 April are also available.
'A lot of those players get to go out and play Arsenal at Stamford Bridge
on Friday,' noted Edwards. 'For some of those who don't have that option,
today will prey on their mind for a long time but sometimes after a
setback, the best thing is to get out on the pitch as soon as possible and
put it right. Hopefully the boys will be celebrating lifting a trophy on
Monday.'
