The Blues secured their fifth successive triumph, a seventh title in nine years, with their biggest ever victory in a final. A 3-1 first leg advantage over Arsenal was extended with four further goals without reply in north London, culminating in a 7-1 aggregate win that saw Jody Morris and his players return the Youth Cup trophy to Cobham, where it remains firmly part of the furniture. Morris collected his fourth winners medal, a second as manager following two preceding campaigns as assistant, and our former midfielder reflected afterwards on a performance that lacked a spark before he challenged the players to win in style. 'It was an emphatic victory in the end but it certainly didn't feel that way at half-time,' he said. 'I was bored in the first half, our tempo was slow and our quality on the ball was lackadaisical. It was almost flat even when we scored and there were too many people on the pitch who took their foot off the gas after that first goal went in so I challenged the boys at half-time to not just crawl over the line but to make a bit of history in style. 'To their credit, the lads were much better in the second half and when Arsenal had to take a few more risks to chase the goals, obviously some gaps appeared that we were able to exploit.' Billy Gilmour's strike had opened the scoring before Callum Hudson-Odoi bagged a brace, his ninth and 10th goals in the cup run this term, either side of a smart finish from substitute Tino Anjorin. A seventh clean sheet from eight games this campaign also meant the Blues finished with just one goal conceded from the third round onwards. It was a perfect response to the disappointment felt by many of the same players just a week previously, when our Under-19s were beaten by Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League final. https://i.imgur.com/FwCYBAM.jpg
'It's not nice to lose and particularly the way we lost in the Under-19s final so we tried to freshen things up a little bit with our team selection for the first leg,' Morris went on. 'We also had in mind not just these two games against Arsenal over a four-day period but the national league final we play against Man United at the weekend, which is just as important for us. 'We maybe didn't sense the opportunity to be as ruthless and go for the throat in the first half but overall our performance in the final over the two legs has been pleasing and I'm extremely proud of the lads.' https://twitter.com/ChelseaFC/status/991073213122842624 The fantastic five-in-a-row has been the epitome of a team effort, with three different coaches leading the teams and so many players involved along the way. It was, therefore, the collective contribution that Morris paid tribute to in his assessment of our achievement in emulating Manchester United's famous Busby Babes, while also remembering two former colleagues and friends who would certainly have enjoyed the spectacle at the Emirates. 'There's a lot of work that's gone on at the Academy for years that's enabled us to do this and we're all aware of the feat we've achieved to win it five times in a row,' continued Morris. 'It means a huge amount. I understand the history of the competition, I played in it myself as a youth team player and I've watched friends win it. 'We've had some fantastic recent history in it, helped by people like Dermot Drummy who started this period of success, and also supported by people like Ray Wilkins. It was only a few rounds back that he texted me after a game to say well done and that shows even people of Ray's era know what the Youth Cup means. 'Even when we were celebrating with the Chelsea fans at the end, I saw somebody holding a 'Ray Wilkins' scarf so it can hit home at times and we were definitely thinking of those two tonight.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2018/05/ youth-cup-reaction--setting-the-standard.html Youth Cup reaction: Setting the standard Tue 1 May 2018 Our youngsters danced on the pitch at the Emirates Stadium, celebrating another remarkable triumph in the FA Youth Cup at the home of our long-time London rivals at senior and junior level. https://i.imgur.com/aOU3HoR.jpg
Jody Morris and his players completed the job they had begun so comprehensively at Stamford Bridge, adding to their 3-1 first leg advantage to run out 7-1 aggregate winners and lift the prestigious silverware for the fifth year in a row. When that sequence first started back in 2014, we trailed Arsenal in the all-time winners table with four successes to their seven. Now, Chelsea sit outright second with nine triumphs, one behind the record holders Manchester United. It was United's famous Busby Babes who won this trophy five years running at the formation of the competition in the 1950s, though the Red Devils had to wait seven years for their next success following that five-in-a-row haul. The Blues have now won six in seven, seven from nine, a unique period of dominance which hopefully shows few signs of letting up. When the Chelsea Academy moved into our new Cobham training ground a decade ago, the ambition was to create a world-leading youth development programme. A homegrown core of local players would provide the foundation, topped up by elite national and international talent, taught by outstanding coaches and helped along the way by a network of support staff. Since then, we have appeared in nine Youth Cup finals, winning seven of them, and reached the Under-19 European final on three occasions since its launch in 2014, winning it twice. Silverware is being lifted and retained, Premier League players are being made, first team debuts are being gained. The long-term plan is bearing fruit. Billy Gilmour set us on the way last night at the Emirates, his sweet strike in the 11th minute effectively ending the final as a serious contest, and the Scottish midfielder was almost speechless after lifting the trophy for the first time. The Glaswegian was a summer signing from Rangers and admitted he watched last year's final at home prior to his move south of the border, which only whet his appetite to get involved. 'It's amazing,' he said after the final whistle. 'Words can't explain how happy I am. We have a great team spirit and to win three trophies now this season, with one more to play for, really shows that. You can see how happy we all are to win. https://i.imgur.com/NaSDZMg.jpg
'I watched last year's final at home with my family so I knew all about the competition and Chelsea's history in it. The pressure is always on us because it's our title so it's an amazing feeling to win it again. We'll have a little party and then get back to work because we have to stay focused on facing Man United in the national final on Saturday.' Priorities shift quickly for perennial winners and Morris's men will be looking to complete an extraordinary quadruple of trophies when they travel to Manchester at the weekend. The national Under-18 final pits the winners of the northern and southern section against each other in a one-off tie and the Blues could secure UEFA Youth League qualification with victory at Leigh Sports Village, as well as retain their national crown. Gilmour has been a youth team regular in his maiden year at the club and will be hoping for involvement again on Saturday lunchtime. His energetic performance in the heart of midfield against the Gunners will have done him no harm in that regard, nor will his eye-catching early opener. 'I was just sitting on the edge of the box, waiting for anything to drop out, then took a touch on my chest from the headed clearance and smacked it into the net,' the 16-year-old noted of his goal. 'It was important for us to get the first goal because if Arsenal had scored first it would have been a completely different game. We knew that would make their heads drop and give us the confidence to go on and score more goals.' This was the first time we'd played away in the second leg of a final for six years but a sizeable and vocal away following made the experience particularly special for the players. George McEachran, the only player to have started every game in the cup run, felt the backing gave the final a unique feel. 'It was different from previous years where the second leg has always been at home at the Bridge, but it was a good experience to play at the Emirates and winning is an extra bonus,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'We could hear the Chelsea fans all game and it was a great support for us so we thank them a lot. https://twitter.com/ChelseaFC/status/991085380563800064 'We knew that Arsenal are a good team and with a 3-1 lead, it would be easy to sit back and protect it but all the boys wanted to finish them off early so getting a goal before half-time was really good.' Callum Hudson-Odoi netted a second-half brace to finish the Youth Cup campaign as the leading scorer with 10 goals, though he admitted the players recognised there were improvements to be made in a frank conversation at the break. 'We didn't play to our normal standards in the first half,' admitted Hudson-Odoi. 'Even though we felt we dominated the game, we knew we could be more clinical in front of goal and create more chances. Jody said at half-time that he wasn't really enjoying the game and neither were we. We felt we needed to show in the second half why we're a good team and prove that point.' https://i.imgur.com/PLJ46H8.jpg
Three goals in 20 minutes did just that, two netted by the forward and one set up by him for substitute Tino Anjorin, to cap another memorable and enjoyable Youth Cup run. Hudson-Odoi has now won the competition twice and urged his team-mates to continue setting the standard. 'We've enjoyed the whole campaign,' he added. 'It's been a really solid year for me individually and also for us as a team because we've only conceded one goal in the whole tournament, which is crazy. This is a massive competition for all of us so it's an incredible feeling to win it again. 'We're still only young players and we're still developing so winning this is another big step for all of us. Hopefully we can keep winning and keep this amazing run going – it's five in a row now but we want to make it six, seven, eight and keep it going.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/news/latest-news/2018/05/ youth-cup-reaction--emulating-excellence.html Youth Cup reaction: Emulating excellence Wed 2 May 2018 As the dust settles on a historic campaign for our Academy in the FA Youth Cup, Chelsea's head of youth development Neil Bath reflects on the achievement of lifting the trophy for a seventh time in nine years, a unique period of dominance in the 65-year history of the prestigious youth competition. Dermot Drummy, Adi Viveash, Joe Edwards and Jody Morris have all orchestrated triumphs as lead coaches, while Paul Clement was a runner-up in 2008, but it is Bath who has been an ever-present throughout. Promoted to the role of Academy manager in 2004, he quickly set about restructuring our youth development programme and has since overseen the most successful period for our junior teams in terms of tournament achievements. A former schoolboys coach, Bath's mandate now is managerial and strategic. His time on the grass is minimal, besides observing training and matches throughout the age groups to ensure a consistent development programme is being delivered. He recruits talented coaches and gives them the freedom to pick the team and the tactics; his job is to knit everything together and keep a steady hand on the tiller. When our youngsters moved into the new Cobham training facility a decade ago, Bath's remit was to create a world-leading football academy. He opted for a bottom-up approach, overhauling recruitment to place a greater emphasis on the development of youngsters from London and the south-east. Eight of our starting 11 in the final on Monday were local boys. The man with the long-term plan has produced a trophy cabinet brimming with silverware; only Manchester United have enjoyed such a prolonged period of success at youth team level and that group would go on to become the legendary Busby Babes. 'We're all really delighted,' remarked Bath after the final whistle at the Emirates. 'A massive congratulations has to go to Jody, Ed [Brand, Under-18s assistant], all the staff and players of the Under-18s to win this competition so well, and particularly this final against our local rivals Arsenal. Our performance over these two legs, and to only concede one goal throughout the whole cup run, is a fantastic achievement. 'The youth team are having an incredible season, having won three trophies already and still to play for a fourth in the national league final on Saturday against Man United. It just shows the professionalism and standards of the players and staff day-in, day-out because you don't win these competitions over one or two games, you win them over many games and many months.' Bath paid tribute to the backing received by the Academy, from fans who turned up in their numbers in north London to provide vocal support, to those within the club who have supported his vision so resolutely. 'I'm just very proud to be the Academy manager and be a part of this achievement,' he said. 'To win the Youth Cup five years in a row, and seven times in nine years, is an amazing feat but it's also a reward for the hard work of many staff over a long period of time. 'The support we receive from staff, parents and fans is just brilliant. We had a great away following at the Emirates and about 60 staff there as well, who follow the team all over the country in this competition. We turn out and we all feel a part of it, not just people from the Academy but the whole club getting behind the youth programme for a number of years. 'Obviously all the players want to get an opportunity in the first team. We've had Andreas Christensen heavily involved this season and we just hope there's a few more that get the chance in the future.' Asked what is behind such an unprecedented period of success, Bath highlighted recruitment and coaching as the key foundations, underpinned by an extensive support network and a special culture. 'On one side you need to have excellent scouting and recruitment throughout the ages, to bring in the best local players at Under-9 and then top the teams up with elite national and international talent along the way,' he explained. 'On the other side, you need the best coaches to develop the players for almost 10 years and if you can bring that together with an excellent support network around them, then it works. This incredible record is a testament to everybody involved in that process. 'Winning year after year then creates a culture and a bit of competition amongst them. There does become some pressure for the next group and I think that's healthy.' - The Chelsea Under-18s' quest to be crowned national league champions, when they play-off against Manchester United at Leigh Sports Village, will be shown live on Chelsea TV.
