At the end of a long campaign, the official Chelsea website sat down with Edwards to reflect on the key moments… == Standout moment == 'Definitely the Checkatrade Trophy,' said Edwards, reflecting on our run to the semi-finals in the senior competition, which ended in heartbreak at Lincoln. 'You go straight in at the deep end and going to Plymouth in our second game of the season was a night of mixed emotions. We started really well and went 2-0 up but all of sudden we got taught a quick lesson in how much you can get punished at that level. It ended up 2-2 and we lost the penalty shootout so we saw early on how difficult it could be. 'We actually didn't feel we'd done enough to qualify out of the group after our first two games and in the back of my mind I was planning for the second half of the season without this competition but we went to Exeter, played well and got a fairly comfortable win in the end. It was a really difficult day for everyone involved because it was the day we found out about Dermot Drummy's passing so that added an extra touch to the evening. 'It was a really mixed journey from the off but then we had a strong run after that in the knockout stages and certainly Lincoln away in the semi-finals would be my high point of the season. It was the perfect game for what we need to get our players exposed to, which is why we enter the competition – a really physically strong senior side that play a direct and aggressive style of football, and to play it in front of a 10,000 crowd that were against us. https://i.imgur.com/wqflfSL.jpg
The Blues were beaten on penalties at Lincoln but it was a perfect game for development 'It's normally heartbreaking to lose on penalties like that and of course we were gutted to be a shootout away from a day out at Wembley but that feeling quickly disappeared and you could see in the dressing room afterwards that it was a proud moment for the lads. We came off the pitch knowing we'd given everything and achieved so much more than any academy side had done before.' == Challenging moment == While the Blues enjoyed runs to the latter stages in both domestic and continental cup competitions, the Premier League 2 campaign was a far bumpier ride. Edwards's side opened the season with just one win in their first nine league outings and the threat of relegation was a genuine consideration. 'We had a long run from the middle of September right the way through to November without winning games and that was tough, especially when you think how many of our players stepped up from the Under-18s and are so used to winning every week,' continued our development squad boss. 'Sometimes if you're playing poorly and losing games, although that's not enjoyable, it can be easier to take and reflect upon because you know exactly what you've got to do to correct things. 'However, we had a number of games in the first third of the season where we played quite well but lost points late on in games or through costly errors. When that happens regularly in a short space of time, it's difficult to keep picking yourselves up and going again. That was a new experience for a lot of us and certainly one that was mentally very tiring and draining. I think it's a big credit to everyone how we turned it around and went from a poor spell to a run of 16 wins in 21 games – if you want to focus on learning and improving from those tough experiences, that's a great example.' == Team performance == 'A big turning point for us was Manchester City at home in December, which was early on in that run of winning games,' he continued. 'We didn't play great in that game and were really being dominated by a team of high quality, 2-0 down with 15 minutes left, but to come back and score three goals so quickly to win the game was a big moment for us mentally and so stands out for me. 'You have to reflect on different games for different reasons though and MK Dons in the Checkatrade Trophy was an impressive performance because we dominated a League One team away from home. We did have some first team players involved like Michy Batshuayi and Kenedy but sometimes it can be difficult for those older players to motivate themselves and it isn't always a strength in terms of the team performance. Yet their professionalism was first-class and that was a night where we really laid down a marker that we were comfortable now in that competition. https://i.imgur.com/wuj7f3K.jpg
Daishawn Redan chases the ball in Madrid, a performance that Edwards cites as one of his favourite of the campaign 'The final performance that springs to my mind as one of my favourites of the season was away at Real Madrid [in the UEFA Youth League]. We had the setback of conceding a goal within five minutes, which isn't ideal away in Madrid, but then we responded by scoring three goals in the space of half an hour. 'However, a harsh red card made it really difficult for us and we couldn't get near the ball with 10 men. We had to show incredible work-rate and togetherness, and then to score again with the last kick of the game was incredible. That was a big win at one of the biggest places you can go to play football.' == Goal of the season == 'I've got two favourite goals of the season. First of all, you cannot overlook Callum Hudson-Odoi's goal against Liverpool. We're here to develop individuals and that was an outstanding individual goal, especially for such a young player to score against a team who were top of the league at that time. https://twitter.com/ChelseaFC/status/934832681908654081 Callum Hudson-Odoi's solo goal for the development squad yesterday... 'The second is one of Daishawn Redan's hat-trick goals away at Derby County. He produced an amazing piece of skill to turn in the box that was Zola-esque but the build-up from the team was great football and also patterns that we'd been working on as a team. It was one of our best performances of the season, with a lot of young players involved, and that goal was the perfect combination of how we executed everything perfectly that day.' == Academy Player of the Year == 'When you talk about individual recognition, you first have to consider availability to the team and the amount of appearances a player has made is usually a good indication,' explained Edwards. 'The Under-23s can often be a strange phase because some of the key members of the group find themselves missing a lot of games and that happened again this year with people like Callum and Trevoh Chalobah. https://i.imgur.com/RxCD8VP.jpg
Reece James picks up his Academy Player of the Year award 'However, Reece James was one of our highest appearance-makers and he offered tremendous consistency throughout. During the first half of the season, we were changing the team quite often and experimenting with our striker position with a couple of players in on trial because our only options were Under-18s. 'When you have quite an inexperienced attacking line, you need contributions from all over the pitch and Reece was probably one of our biggest attacking threats from right-back. Not only did he show he could cope physically in his first season at this level but the quality and consistency of his delivery into the box was of a really high standard every week and that made a big difference for us.' -- "We believe the same thing."
