Paul Simpson had named a much-changed squad at the start of the week, with FA Technical Director Dan Ashworth urging UEFA to consider rescheduling the annual tournament so all players could participate without disrupting their pre-season at club level. Chelsea were still the best-represented club in the squad with five teenagers travelling to Finland – Trevoh Chalobah, Jamie Cumming, Conor Gallagher, Tariq Lamptey and Dujon Sterling. Chalobah and Sterling have both recently completed loan moves to Ipswich Town and Coventry City respectively and the pair started for the young Lions in their group opener as the holders fell behind within two minutes. However, a spirited comeback sealed all three points as Tottenham's Japhet Tanganga levelled from close range after a free-kick was whipped in from the left before Ben Brereton made it 2-1 at the end of the first half. The standout goal went England's way early in the second half as Sunderland's Elliot Embleton curled in a brilliant strike to put the contest beyond Turkey, although the Turks did pull a further goal back after 57 minutes to ensure a competitive finale. Cumming, Gallagher and Lamptey were unused substitutes. A victory for Ukraine over France in the other Group B fixture means it will be a clash between the top two next for Simpson's side on Friday 20 July, before they conclude the group against France next Monday 23 July. Vladyslav Supriaha levelled against the run of play, before George Hirst hit the post from 20 yards and Ben Brereton had a goal ruled out for offside. Both sides could progress to the last four with one group game remaining. England won the tournament last year but are without a number of star players because it clashes with clubs' pre-season tours. The top two sides in each group progress to the semi-finals - and England would also qualify for next year's Under-20 World Cup with a place in the last four. England's Under-20s and Under-17s won their respective World Cups during a hugely successful year for England's youth teams last year. Paul Simpson's side went into the final group encounter against France needing just a point to advance to the semi-finals after beating Turkey and drawing with Ukraine over the preceding seven days at the tournament. The team had stormed through qualification with five wins from six, having won all but one of their 11 competitive games in 2016/17 on the way to lifting the trophy last July in Georgia. However, France knew they needed three points in order to progress themselves and Les Bleus produced a blistering performance to pip England to second place in Group B. Goals from AS Monaco's Nabil Alioui and Lyon's Myziane Maolida gave them a 2-0 half-time advantage, though it might have been greater but for the efforts of goalkeeper Ellery Balcombe in the England goal. Simpson's holders restarted with more purpose as they searched for a route back into the contest but their defensive frailties were exposed frequently in the second period.
