Checkatrade Trophy report: Swindon 0 Chelsea 4
07 Aug 2018
Our development squad made an impressive start to the new season in the
Checkatrade Trophy, scoring four without reply against League Two Swindon
Town this evening (Tuesday).

Charlie Brown opened his account with a brace at the County Ground, first
converting Juan Castillo's cross from close range before adding a second
with a composed one-on-one finish early after the restart. Charly Musonda
had doubled our lead after half an hour from the penalty spot, while Ike
Ugbo rounded off an excellent night with a late fourth.
The Blues lined up in a 3-5-2 shape, strengthened by the inclusion of
Fankaty Dabo, Musonda and Ugbo in the starting team. Brown partnered the
latter up front, while captain Dabo started on the right of a back three
alongside Joseph Colley and Marc Guehi.
Joe Edwards's side were semi-finalists in this competition last term but
only one starter from our defeat at Lincoln City returned to the side for
the 2018/19 opening group game as Juan Castillo operated at left
wing-back, with Tariq Lamptey marauding down the opposite flank. George
McEachran sat as the deepest central midfielder, with Luke McCormick and
Musonda slightly more advanced, and Jamie Cumming started in goal.
Swindon opened their League Two campaign with a dramatic late victory over
Macclesfield Town at the weekend and the Robins included former Chelsea
Academy defender Dion Conroy at the heart of their defence.
A quiet opening was punctuated after seven minutes by the withdrawal of
McCormick from the engine room of our team, the man with three pre-season
goals from midfield forced off with an early injury. Joe Romanski had the
game's first effort just before the quarter-hour mark after smart build-up
play from the hosts but his shot was fired straight at the grateful
Cumming.
The deadlock was soon broken down the other end as our youngsters took the
lead with 16 minutes played after their first incisive attack of the
evening. The move formed encouragingly down the right with Lamptey leading
the charge before switching the ball to his fellow wing-back Castillo just
inside the 18-yard box. After trapping the pass first time, the Dutchman
delivered a perfect low cross and Brown was on the mark to slide in from
six yards out.

Charlie Brown slides in to open the scoring in Swindon
It was a goal that filled the Blues with confidence and provided a
platform for a dominant first half display. Castillo crossed dangerously
again but Phil Brown's side failed to heed the warning, allowing Lamptey
to swing in a centre from the right that substitute Billy Gilmour headed
just off-target.
Ugbo went close to doubling the lead midway through the first period after
latching on to a loose ball in the box following McEachran’s free-kick,
though the striker's effort was charged down bravely and deflected behind.
Scott Twine spurned a rare opportunity for Swindon moments later, the
midfielder guilty of dragging his low effort wide of Cumming's far post,
and it was Edwards's side whose threat grew further before they made it
2-0.
Lamptey enjoyed an impressive 2017/18 with the Under-18s, missing only a
handful of games all season and scoring in the national final against
Manchester United. On his development squad debut, the diminutive wideman
was continuing that form and it was his trademark speed and trickery that
fooled Conroy into committing a foul in the box. Musonda picked up the
ball and dispatched the spot-kick from 12 yards in cool fashion.
The damage could have been greater before the break as only a last-ditch
block from Sid Nelson prevented Ugbo testing the Swindon goalkeeper, while
Musonda curled a free-kick narrowly wide. Despite such a positive
performance and two-goal lead, Edwards will have been mindful at half-time
of his side opening game in last season's Checkatrade Trophy, when they
surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw the game away at Plymouth Argyle.

Ike Ugbo bolstered the ranks of a young Blues side and notched our fourth
goal late in the game
Yet there was little complacency among the visitors' ranks as they
restarted with the same momentum, passing sharpness and intent to attack.
Ugbo bent a strike wide after space opened up on the edge of the penalty
area, while only goal-line defending from Swindon kept the deficit at
two.
The Robins had their best chance to launch a comeback 10 minutes into the
second period with a free-kick right on the edge of the box but Twine
blazed the effort high over the crossbar. Within two minutes, it was 3-0.
A long, direct ball forward from the back fell nicely into the path of
Brown and his finish was an accomplished one, slotting the bouncing ball
confidently inside the near post.
Swindon's seven changes from the weekend may be cited in mitigation for
the hosts but our youngsters were bright and unrelenting on their first
outing of the campaign. Musonda's efforts tracking back to block a
dangerous cross epitomised the mentality and desire to keep a clean sheet,
while Colley proved to be the right man in the right place in clearing off
the line late on.

Charly Musonda scored from the spot and produced an all-round impressive
performance
Our final flourish came in the last minute of regulation time as Ugbo
pounced at the second attempt, initially denied by a point-blank save from
Luke McCormick in the Swindon goal before rising to nod the rebound into
the corner of the net. It capped an outstanding opening night for Edwards's
boys, who put three early points on the board in Southern Group C.

the season at Stamford Bridge this Sunday 12 August. Everton are the
visitors for a 1pm kick-off and tickets are on general sale now.

Checkatrade Trophy reaction: Teaching translated

It was success in Swindon for our development squad as they kicked off
their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with an impressive performance and four
goals without reply at the County Ground.

The young Blues were dominant from the first whistle, controlling the
tempo of the game with their possession play and offering a consistent
threat in the final third. Charlie Brown and Charly Musonda scored inside
half an hour to put Joe Edwards's side firmly in control before Brown
scored again after the restart and Ike Ugbo provided the final flourish in
the last minute of normal time.
After much hard work in pre-season, Edwards was pleased to finally be
involved in competitive football and praised the attitude of a team
comprised of several debutants alongside a few more experienced
professionals.
'It was a fantastic team performance,' the development squad boss told the
official Chelsea website after the game. 'The scoreline is emphatic but I
don't think it flatters us because we could easily have had a few more
goals.
'A big word for us from tonight is personality because we managed the game
in the second half, we showed the right mentality and kept our
professionalism. In our first Checkatrade Trophy game last year, we were
2-0 up and playing well but we drew the game so we spoke at half-time and
reminded the boys to be aware of that.
'The younger boys making their first appearance at this level really stood
up and were ready for the battle, but at the same time were so comfortable
and composed on the ball. For the older players like Musonda and Fankaty
Dabo this type of game is nothing new but they had a first-class attitude
throughout.
'People in the stand will have noticed Charly running past three or four
players but we also saw him making a sliding block on the edge of our
six-yard box in the second half so that part of his game was really
impressive.
'When you apply yourselves like that, with the talent we have in our team,
there's always a chance the performance will be that good.'
The visitors were handed an early blow by the withdrawal through injury of
Luke McCormick, their top scorer in pre-season. His replacement Billy
Gilmour, two years younger and slighter in frame, may have caused concern
to some managers but Edwards was emphatic in his backing of his diminutive
but dominating midfield.
'There are enough smaller players at the top of the game, like Luka Modric
who people say is the best midfielder in the world right now, but in
England there's a question mark over the smaller, lightweight players when
they come and play in games like this against stronger Football League
players,' explained Edwards.
'We had players like Tariq Lamptey and Charlie Brown on the pitch, while
our midfield after Luke went off injured early on [George McEachran,
Gilmour and Musonda] weigh about 100kg between them, but they completely
run the game with their technical ability and their brains. That's what we
try to teach throughout the age groups in our Academy.'

17-year-old George McEachran enjoyed an impressive evening in the heart of
our midfield
It was that vindication for our football philosophy that pleased Edwards
so much in Wiltshire as a young Chelsea side with an average age less than
19-years-old recorded a comprehensive victory against League Two
opposition.
'We've said how much we enjoyed our run in the competition last season,
how special and valuable it was in terms of the experiences we got,' he
continued. 'Many of those experiences against the tough crowds and the big
moments came in the knockout stages - everyone has memories of the
semi-final playing in front of 10,000 fans but we can't be thinking about
games like that until we get out of the group.
'It started tonight and it's nice when things do go so well and you win
your first game, especially as it shows all the hard work in pre-season
has translated on to the pitch and paid off.'
