Under-18s report: Chelsea 1 Leicester 1
18 Aug 2018
Chelsea Under-18s left it late to break the deadlock in their opening home
game of the season but conceded even later as the points were shared at
Cobham.

A frustrating afternoon for Andy Myers's side looked like it had been
salvaged with minutes to spare as Tino Anjorin (pictured top) found the
breakthrough goal with five minutes left to play. However, Leicester
responded with an instant attack and levelled from the penalty spot as
Sidnei Tavares rolled in the equaliser.
Myers made one change from the opening-day victory at Southampton as
George Nunn came into the side in attack and Anjorin dropped deeper in
midfield. It was the same 4-2-3-1 shape with Karlo Ziger in goal protected
by a back four of James Clark, Marcel Lavinier, Jack Wakely and Ian
Maatsen.
Clinton Mola retained his central midfield berth alongside Anjorin, while
Marcel Lewis, Thierno Ballo and Nunn supported Armando Broja up front.
Anjorin, Ballo and Nunn had all scored in our win on the South Coast,
though it had taken a while to get going seven days previously and it was
a similar story at an overcast Cobham.
A quiet opening 10 minutes was brought to life with a Chelsea corner from
the right, floated in by Maatsen and met in the air by Wakely, though
Leicester's Polish keeper Jakub Stolarczyk reached down low to his right
and palmed away the looping header at the foot of his upright.
The Foxes finished fifth last term with a pragmatic but effective style of
football, settling into an organised shape out of possession and working
tirelessly to close pockets of space. It left the hosts frustrated for
long spells in the first half, with Trevor Peake's side posing an
occasional threat every so often.
Striker Harrison Myring fashioned their best chance of the first period,
running intelligently into space down the right channel to reach a long
ball forward, though his first-time strike on the bounce failed to trouble
Ziger's goal.
The Blues were lacking a bit of guile and subtlety in the final third but
their attacking intent was persistent and growing. Anjorin fired narrowly
off-target after working room for a shot from the edge of the box before
Ballo met Maatsen's centre but lacked a good connection with his header.

Clinton Mola keeps the ball despite the attention of several Leicester
players
Our Austrian forward went closer a few minutes later as he latched on to a
clever clipped pass into the box but his effort was thwarted by a crucial
block from Connor Barrett. It was the same story five minutes before the
break as Anjorin initiated a counter-attack by winning the ball back in
his own half and Ballo found Broja over the top but the striker's drive
hit a defender before Stolarczyk had to worry about it.
There was a Chelsea change at the interval as Jon Russell replaced Mola in
midfield but it was Leicester who almost took the lead seven minutes after
the restart. Terell Pennant pounced on a mistake at the back and took aim
at goal, his mis-hit effort looping up and forcing Ziger to claw the ball
behind with a smart save.
Russell had provided the pass for Ballo's goal last weekend and it was
another straight ball forward from the 17-year-old causing problems in the
Leicester box. Broja hassled defenders as they struggled to clear their
lines before Dennis Gyamfi put it behind for a corner. From the following
short set-piece routine, Lewis's inswinging cross was flicked towards goal
by Nunn but landed over the crossbar.
In the corresponding fixture last season, a 2-0 Chelsea win, it had taken
over an hour for the Blues to break the deadlock and time was at a premium
for our youngsters once again as each opportunity went begging.
Myers introduced Henry Lawrence and pushed Anjorin into a more advanced
role, which reaped instant rewards as the England Under-17 international
started to receive the ball in more dangerous areas of space. However,
Leicester's resolve remained strong as they sensed the chance to pick up a
point at Cobham for the first time since 2014.

Marcel Lewis takes control of possession on the wing
The drama was back-loaded into an eventful final five minutes as the hosts
broke the deadlock just in the nick of time. Pierre Ekwah Elimby had been
sent on in a midfield role as the Blues switched to three at the back late
on and it was the Frenchman's deep, left-footed cross from the right flank
that gave Anjorin the chance to divert the ball beyond Stolarczyk for what
seemed like a winning goal.
Unfortunately for Myers's youngsters, Leicester responded instantly with
an attack which resulted in the Foxes being awarded a penalty. Lawrence
was the man adjudged to have fouled Luke Thomas and Tavares stepped up to
confidently roll the ball into the corner.
There was still time remaining for one final chance for Anjorin but
Stolarczyk stood tall and made an impressive save that secured his side a
precious point. The Blues return to Under-18 Premier League action next
weekend with a trip to Tottenham.
