Checkatrade Trophy report: Plymouth 0 Chelsea 5
30 Oct 2018
Our development squad had a great night in the Checkatrade Trophy, winning
5-0 at League One Plymouth to secure their place in the knockout round.

Charlie Brown headed us in front before an own goal doubled the advantage
in the first half. After the interval, strikes from Martell
Taylor-Crossdale, Tino Anjorin and Daishawn Redan rounded off an excellent
performance, our biggest-ever victory in the competition.
Joe Edwards made four changes for the Devon decider from our last outing
in the Checkatrade Trophy, recalling Tariq Lamptey, Juan Castillo, Conor
Gallagher and Brown to his team, the latter having signed a new contract
at the start of the week.

Lamptey and Castillo continued in the wing-back positions made their own
in this 3-5-2 system, with Josh Grant, Joseph Colley and Richard Nartey
preferred as the centre-back trio protecting goalkeeper Jamie Cumming.
Gallagher joined George McEachran and Billy Gilmour in central midfield,
while Brown partnered Taylor-Crossdale up front. Grant and Nartey were the
only players in the side not still in their teenage years as the Blues
lined up with an average age over five years younger than their League One
hosts, who made five alterations from the 11 that started a 4-1 win at
Scunthorpe at the weekend.
Our youngsters had trailed in three of their previous four outings but
they started brightly on a cold evening in the south-west and had rattled
the woodwork inside three minutes of kick-off. Taylor-Crossdale was the
man responsible for shaking Michael Cooper's crossbar, the striker cutting
in onto his right foot and unleashing a drive that smacked the bar before
looping behind for a goal kick.
Positive momentum stayed with Edwards's side and Castillo warmed the palms
of Cooper a few moments later, driving forward from deep down the left
before shooting low and forcing the Argyle keeper into a routine low save.
The hosts were hassled and harried in possession, unable to assert any
territorial threat early on.
Gallagher's eyes lit up in the 18-yard box as a lofted ball dropped
invitingly for the midfielder, though his header lacked the requisite
power or accuracy to find the far corner. Down the other end, the Pilgrims
were starting to settle on the ball and Alex Fletcher, scorer of a brace
when these sides met in the competition last term, forced Grant into a
brave block on the edge of the box.
Set-pieces have so often proved our undoing in the Checkatrade Trophy over
the past three seasons, with the power and experience of seasoned
professionals particularly critical at corners and attacking free-kicks.
It was almost déjà vu as Plymouth's best chance of the half was
fashioned from a right-sided corner, turned towards goal at the far post
by Niall Canavan and clawed away by the alert Cumming.
That save proved twice as important within minutes as the boys in blue
broke the deadlock after 21 minutes. Tafari Moore had kept us at bay by
deflecting Castillo's effort behind for a corner but it only delayed the
inevitable. Gilmour stepped up to swing in from the left and his delivery
floated all the way through the box before being headed in by Brown, one
of the smallest players in the vicinity.

Brown heads in his 10th goal of the season to open the scoring
The forward's 10th goal of the season was just reward for a high-tempo and
confident opening from the 2017/18 semi-finalists and opened the contest
for the first time. Luke Jephcott fired against the outside of the near
post from the left, though Cumming will argue he had his angles covered,
before
Taylor-Crossdale curled inches over with a neat attempt on the turn.
Plymouth's productivity came mainly with balls into the box and they
threatened an equaliser through those means with 10 minutes of the first
half remaining. Ashley Smith-Brown picked up a loose ball on the right and
crossed left-footed for Jephcott, whose flicked header dropped narrowly
off-target.
The evening's second goal came with 37 minutes on the clock and, though
scored by a man in green, it doubled our advantage on the scoreboard.
Castillo had caused problems throughout the half with his direct running
and another mazy dribble fashioned an opportunity to put the ball low and
hard across the face of goal. It didn't reach a team-mate but Yann Songo'o
intervened with the decisive touch as the defender, facing his own goal,
diverted the cross into his own net.

Castillo was a menace to Plymouth's defenders throughout
It could have been 3-0 before the break as only an outstretched leg from
Songo'o prevented Brown's strike arrowing towards goal, though the
Pilgrims restarted with more purpose once the second half got underway.
Antoni Sarcevic made a clever run on the defender's last shoulder but was
unable to direct his shot between the posts, though it provided a warning
for the visitors to remain focus and concentrated.
The memories of last August will also have been vivid in the mind, the
Blues having led by two goals until the final moments at this ground when
Fletcher scored twice to snatch a draw. However, a Plymouth onslaught was
not forthcoming, which owed much to our resolute defending, ratty midfield
work and constant stretching of the play both wide and deep.
Chelsea chances continued to come as well, with the lively Castillo at the
heart of so much attacking play. It was the Dutchman's low cross that
almost proved perfect for Taylor-Crossdale, though the sliding striker
could not quite stretch enough to reach the ball before the same pair
combined again down the left but Taylor-Crossdale scuffed just beyond the
far post.
Cumming knew his was far more than a watching brief, even if his
involvement was intermittent. A test of focus came for the keeper with a
quarter of the game left but he passed with full marks, diving down low to
his left to pounce on substitute Peter Grant's rasping shot.

Anjorin fires in a goal on debut in the Checkatrade Trophy
The killer goal came after 74 minutes as Taylor-Crossdale's efforts in the
final third finally paid off. Substitute Anjorin, who doesn't turn 17
until next month, made a key contribution down the right flank and
delivered beautifully for the striker to slide in to score. It effectively
ended the contest and ensured our progress to the next round, though the
visitors were in no mood to let up.
Anjorin turned from provider to scorer late on, continuing his excellent
recent form and bending a brilliant strike into the top corner from
outside the box. His eye-catching cameo was capped two minutes from time
as he collected another assist, picking up a pass from Lamptey and rolling
the ball across the face of goal for Redan to poke into an unguarded goal.

Redan notches our fifth of the evening
The 5-0 scoreline marked our biggest ever win in the competition and takes
Edwards's side top of Southern Group C. Only a big win of their own from
Newport County at home to Plymouth in the group's final game next month
can prevent the young Blues finishing as group winners, though our place
in the last-32 is secure no matter what.

Checkatrade Trophy reaction: Perfect under pressure
31 Oct 2018
Under the lights and under pressure to perform, with a win required to
take them into the knockout stage of the senior Checkatrade Trophy, our
development squad provided an emphatic performance to thrash League One
opponents Plymouth Argyle.

The Pilgrims were helpless to stop our journey into the last-32 as they
fell to a heavy 5-0 home defeat at Home Park. On the eve of Halloween, it
was a treat of a display from Joe Edwards's young side to take them top of
Southern Group C as goals from Charlie Brown, Martell Taylor-Crossdale,
Tino Anjorin and Daishawn Redan secured the victory. After the game on a
cold night in the south-west, Edwards reflected on a terrific team effort.
'First and foremost, I thought we built everything from how we defended as
a team,' he told the official Chelsea website.
'We knew we had to make sure they couldn't get crosses into our box, which
is what these teams often like to do to us, and we stopped that well. Our
intensity to press was really good, we always looked a threat especially
on the break and we got better and better as the second half went on.'

Charlie Brown's header was significant, setting us on the way to a
memorable win in Plymouth
The Blues have become something of a contradiction on their travels and
this was their sixth win from seven away games this season. Yet in five
home fixtures they have still not tasted victory and Edwards was left
particularly frustrated following a 3-2 weekend reverse to Brighton at
Aldershot.
The manager did reserve words of praise for the mentality of his side in
the aftermath of defeat to the Seagulls after watching them fight back
from 3-0 down and he was similarly admiring of their character on a
do-or-die night in Devon.
'Although we were frustrated on Saturday, we still didn't feel we got what
we deserved from the game,' he continued. 'We played well enough to get a
more positive result but when it does go against you like that and your
character is tested, as a team you have to make sure it doesn't deflate
you and drain your confidence.
'All the boys want to stay in this competition for as long as possible
because the games are great experiences. We knew there was a chance we
could go straight out in the group stage so that brought a certain amount
of pressure to the match.
'When you come into a game like tonight, it's about standing up to the
challenge and I thought in that respect the lads were fantastic. Right
from the off, we were sharp on the press and strong in the tackle. We got
the ball down on a fantastic pitch and played some good stuff at times. We
made it difficult for a strong League One team to cope with us and that's
a massive credit to the lads.'
Edwards had a special mention for 16-year-old substitute Anjorin, whose
20-minute cameo brought two assists and a goal.
'It's been a fantastic week for Tino,' he noted. 'He had a great
pre-season with us, then went back and got his season going with the
Under-18s but he's rejoined us in the last 10 days and done extremely
well.

Our youngsters applaud the Chelsea supporters at Home Park
'He scored a debut goal in the UEFA Youth League, then he scored a debut
goal at the weekend in Premier League 2, and now he's got a fantastic goal
on his first appearance in the Checkatrade Trophy. He's really showing the
player that he can be.'
The fixtures continue to flow quickly for our youngsters, who travel to
Arsenal in the league on Saturday before heading to Sweden in the UEFA
Youth League. However, Edwards is able to face the challenges with
increasing options and a maturing collective.
'Whatever goes on between the two boxes, particularly in these games
against senior opponents, the game is decided by how well you defend and
how clinical you are in the attacking box,' he added. 'We learnt that at
Newport last month because we didn't play too badly there but we defended
poorly and conceded three goals.
'It's pleasing to have good options in the ranks and everyone is chipping
in with goals and assists. We have Luke McCormick, who is an experienced
player for us, almost ready to come back from injury, and Tariq Uwakwe who
did fantastic in our last away game at Manchester City. There's
competition even in training and hopefully we can maintain this form ahead
of a big game against Arsenal at the weekend.'
