The Blues controlled the contest from the first whistle, asserting their authority as holders of the trophy. Tino Anjorin broke the deadlock inside 10 minutes and the advantage was rarely threatened on a chilly morning in the north-east, with Jon Russell doubling the tally from the penalty spot just before the break. Newcastle's best opportunity came early after the restart as Tai Ebanks escaped down the right but his low cross was deflected behind and the visitors were able to contain any further threat from the Magpies. Jack Wakely added to the scoreline late on from a corner as Andy Myers's side made it six points from two games in the cup and recorded an eighth straight win in all competitions. Myers made five changes from the side that won a tough league game against Norwich last weekend, recalling Nicolas Tie in goal for his first appearance of the season after a lengthy injury layoff for the French teenager. Sam McClelland, Pierre Ekwah Elimby and Wakely were chosen in central defence, the latter having scored a memorable winner against the Canaries seven days previously. Russell was also a scorer that afternoon and he lined up in midfield alongside Clinton Mola, while Jordan Aina and Marcel Lavinier started in the wing-back positions as the young Blues continued with their 3-4-2-1 system. Thierno Ballo led the line up front supported by Marcel Lewis and Anjorin. https://i.imgur.com/qNUjFny.jpg
Newcastle had won twice in 10 matches this term before welcoming Myers's men to their Little Benton training ground and they set their stall out early on with a narrow back five and a congested midfield. Chelsea dominated possession and that quickly translated into chances created, with Lewis bending a free-kick just wide after five minutes. The opening goal was scored moments later as Anjorin reached double figures for the campaign with a tidy volley from just inside the box following good work down the left by the overlapping Aina. It was the eighth game in a row the 16-year-old midfielder had scored in. An early lead settled our play and allowed the visitors to be patient with their build-up. Lewis delivered a series of teasing corners, aided by a persistent wind, but the home defenders cleared the six-yard box well on each occasion. Their first shot came just after the half-hour mark as Oisin McEntee pounced on a loose ball but his overhead effort was fired straight at Tie. https://i.imgur.com/KEqjOX5.jpg
Thierno Ballo flies through the air Down the other end, it was almost a second as Lewis fired low and hard towards the bottom corner. Defender Jude Swailes took a swipe at the spinning ball and somehow managed to slice his clearance behind and over his own crossbar from two yards out. For the second week running, the Blues benefited from a penalty decision in their favour, albeit fortunately on this occasion. Aina accelerated past Ebanks and into the box, where he went down under the defender's half-hearted challenge. It looked like contact was minimal but the referee pointed to the spot and Russell stepped up to convert. https://i.imgur.com/vn6W2AP.jpg
Jon Russell strokes in his second penalty in eight days Newcastle's ambition hardly improved in the second half as their journey in the competition looked like coming to an early end. Otto Huuhtanen made a good save to keep out Anjorin’s sweetly struck drive 10 minutes into the second period before the goalkeeper almost contributed to a third goal, his clearance charged down by the hard-pressing Lewis but the ball flying narrowly wide. Dave Watson's side fashioned their best chance midway through the half as Ebanks got forward and delivered low into the box towards George Rounsfell, though Wakely recovered and diverted the ball away from danger. https://i.imgur.com/hi6BEtW.jpg
Ekwah Elimby goes close to heading in his first Chelsea goal Ekwah Elimby ought to have netted his first goal for the club with 15 minutes remaining after Lewis found the big defender at the back post with a lovely clipped cross but his header lacked the necessary conviction and arrowed the wrong side of the near upright. However, his fellow centre-half soon made it 3-0 by turning in a corner as Wakely claimed his second goal in eight days. It was a margin of victory fully deserved and leaves us tied with Manchester United on six points in Group F ahead of our trip to the north-west next month. Our superior goal difference means a draw would take Myers's men through as group winners.
