Youth Cup report: Manchester United 4 Chelsea 3
17 Dec 2018
Our long winning run in the FA Youth Cup came to an end in Manchester as
United inflicted a first defeat in the competition on our youngsters for
over five years.

Mason Greenwood grabbed the headlines with a hat-trick to fire the hosts
to a 4-3 victory, with Di'shon Bernard also on the scoresheet for the Red
Devils. Tariq Lamptey had equalised to send us in level at the break but
an early setback after the restart restored United's advantage and they
were 4-1 up by the time Bernard was dismissed for a second booking.
The holders rallied and pulled two back in the final 15 minutes through
Tino Anjorin and Daishawn Redan, but time soon ran out on their
record-equalling run of five successive Youth Cup triumphs.
Five of those who featured in April's 7-1 aggregate victory over Arsenal
in the final returned to start for the Blues, now managed by Andy Myers
and looking to continue a defence of the trophy that stretched back to
2014.
Redan led the line up front supported by Thierno Ballo and Anjorin, the
latter having scored our seventh goal of the tie at the Emirates to secure
a comprehensive victory. Myers opted for a 3-4-2-1 system, deploying
Marcel Lavinier, Dynel Simeu and Jack Wakely in central defence in front
of Karlo Ziger in goal.
Lamptey and Ian Maatsen lined up at right wing-back and left wing-back
respectively, the visitors optimistic that they could cause problems down
the flanks, while Clinton Mola joined captain Billy Gilmour in central
midfield.

United manager Neil Ryan picked the same 11 that started in last weekend's
3-0 win between the sides in the Under-18 Premier League Cup, while the
visitors made seven changes from nine days previously at Carrington as
they called on the services of a quartet of players normally involved with
the development squad.
Only United have lifted the most prestigious youth trophy in English
football on more occasions than Chelsea and only United have matched our
remarkable run of five triumphs in a row, which presented numerous
sub-plots to an already intriguing tie and plenty of motivation for the
Reds.
They fired an early warning with just three minutes on the clock as Aliou
Traore drove forward purposefully from midfield and fed Greenwood on the
left, though the striker's low effort failed to trouble Ziger and flew
wide across the face of goal.

Billy Gilmour on the ball for the Blues in Manchester
Gilmour then delivered a dangerous free-kick, swung into the six-yard box
but defended well, before the home side struck an early first blow in the
contest. It arrived in the most bizarre of circumstances as Ziger slipped
waiting for a pass back and then failed to recover, allowing Greenwood the
opportunity to pounce and drill a strong finish beyond our Croatian
stopper.
Just like on our last visit to Manchester, it was an early deficit for
Myers's men to find a way to overcome. Their response was positive as they
began to threaten amid a frenetic pace to the game. Maatsen advanced down
the left and found Anjorin in the box with an inviting cross, though the
17-year-old's header was weak and wide.
The next attack was more concerning for the hosts with Anjorin again at
the heart of the action. He jinked towards goal from the left wing and
played a lovely low pass towards Redan, waiting unmarked in the centre,
but United skipper Brandon Williams intervened to put the ball over his
own crossbar. From the resulting corner, Wakely won the header but it
landed on the roof of James Thompson's net.

Ziger races off his line to clear the danger
The Red Devils were clearly confident following their recent win and
Greenwood epitomised that with an ambitious effort from halfway that tried
to catch Ziger off his line but landed comfortably off-target.
Moments later, there was a speculative moment in the United box as Lamptey
burst beyond James Garner and appeared to be taken down in a tangling of
legs between wing-back and defender. However, the officials had a
different take on the incident and the referee penalised Lamptey with a
yellow card for simulation.
With the stakes high and the pressure piqued, the cup tie continued to
swing from one end to the other. Gilmour's quick and clever footwork
opened up space in the 18-yard box for Anjorin but the defenders closed
him down to block, while Simeu made a crucial headed clearance to divert
Dylan Levitt's dangerous free-kick to safety.
The lively Greenwood continued to cause problems and Ziger was relieved
when the forward's sweet strike flew straight into his arms from the edge
of the box, though the Blues had to resort to more dubious means to stop
the teenager on his next foray upfield. Attacking down the right channel,
he was taken down 20 yards from goal but Garner failed to keep the
set-piece down.
The holders kept pushing for an equaliser, frequently threatening through
set-pieces, but Garner headed off the line to deny Redan and Simeu spurned
a stooping headed chance at the back post following a deep corner
delivered from the right.
Persistence paid off for Myers's men as Lamptey levelled two minutes
before the break. The wing-back was heavily involved throughout, starting
the move on the right and exchanging passes with Ballo before driving
inside and slotting the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

Redan had an opportunity to score again before half-time, the Dutchman
escaping in behind a United defence still in shock, but he delayed his
shot and the effort was eventually blocked. Yet it was deserved parity at
the midway point and an opportunity for Myers to reflect with his players
on how to find a way to win in the second period.
Those plans were ripped up 45 seconds after the restart as the hosts took
the lead for the second time on the night. Sloppy play in midfield cost us
again as the Reds broke forward quickly and in numbers, with Greenwood
teed up to bend a simple finish into the bottom far corner.
Gilmour's corners looked likeliest to unlock the door for the Blues and
his latest inswinging delivery found Simeu rising high at the far post,
though the defender once again failed to test Thompson in the United goal.
The hosts then lost their captain to injury on the hour mark and were
forced to reshuffle their pack, though it didn't curb their attacking
inhibitions and they struck a decisive blow with their third goal halfway
through the second period.
A deep delivery from the right was headed downwards by Bernard and
seemingly clawed away in the nick of time by Ziger. Yet the linesman's
raised flag indicated the ball had crossed the line and our cup defence
was facing its biggest challenge yet.
Tensions started to rise on a cold night in Leigh and crunching tackles
started to fly in on players of both sides. A glimmer of hope was
presented to Myers's men with 17 minutes remaining as Bernard saw red for
a second booking of the half, leaving the Reds with just one recognisable
defender left on the pitch for the final stages.
That hope was quickly extinguished though as Greenwood capitalised on a
short pass across the back four and confidently advanced to find the net
and complete his hat-trick to make it 4-1.
It seemed that would be the end of matters but you can never rule out
Chelsea in the Youth Cup and Myers's men showed character to keep on
fighting. Maatsen won a penalty in the 83rd minute after being felled
right on the edge of the box and Anjorin stepped up to rifle in from 12
yards.

Ballo battles for the ball
Redan then made things interesting as substitute Marcel Lewis fashioned a
chance and the striker squeezed a finish inside the post to set up a
grandstand final few minutes. The best opportunity of the late rally fell
to Lewis but his first-time shot on the half-volley was sliced horribly
wide.
D'Mani Mellor struck the post in stoppage time before one final corner for
the Blues gave everyone the chance to pile forward. It was keeper Ziger
who got the final touch but the ball bounced wide and the referee's
whistle brought our first defeat in the competition since the 2013 final.

Youth Cup reaction: Tough to take
18 Dec 2018
Our quest to win a record sixth successive FA Youth Cup title was halted
at the third round stage following a 4-3 defeat for Chelsea Under-18s in
Manchester last night (Monday).
https://i.imgur.com/EZYrbK5.jpg

Tariq Lamptey, Tino Anjorin and Daishawn Redan all scored for Andy Myers's
side but it was goals gifted at the other end of the field that ultimately
condemned our youngsters to a first defeat in the competition since the
2013 final. After the game, Myers reflected on a disappointing evening and
cited a lack of composure in possession as a key factor in the loss.
'It's very hard to take,' he confessed to the official Chelsea website.
'It's not just about what we've done in previous years in this competition
but the manner in which we've lost tonight and what we've shown of
ourselves. We weren't technically good enough in certain areas and we
gifted them the goals through not being good enough on the ball.'
'United had quality up front but I don't think they created the chances to
score – we gifted them goals with some of our play.'
Mason Greenwood earned the headlines for the hosts with a hat-trick but
all four goals were preventable in the eyes of Myers, who urged his side
to feel the pain of defeat and use it as motivation moving forward.
'The first goal was a mistake but we recovered well and got ourselves back
into the game by half-time,' he continued. 'Conceding a second straight
after the kick-off was a blow but we should have dealt with the first ball
and then it was people not doing their jobs on a set-piece that made it
3-1.
'The fourth goal was another gift with a square ball across defence and,
to be fair to United, they took their chances really well. We're
incredibly disappointed because we just weren't good enough on the night.
'The challenge now is to bounce back. It is development football but it's
not a nice feeling to lose and go out of the Youth Cup like that. The
players need to take this feeling and keep it as a reminder of how bad it
feels to lose.'
