PL2 Report: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 2
30 Aug 2019
Toni Rudiger successfully negotiated 90 minutes at Aldershot tonight as
our development squad team came back from 2-0 down at half-time to remain
unbeaten this season.

This was the second outing at this level for Rudiger and one that Frank
Lampard had said earlier in the day would be the final step of his rehab
from injury before he is properly in contention for a place in the senior
team once again.
The action that led to the Spurs strikes did not directly involve the
German and once we went 2-0 down, to goals by Phoenix Patterson and from
the penalty spot by Harvey White, it was Rudiger who helped take the game
to the visitors at the other end of the pitch, with his aerial power and
some strong running.
Chelsea continued to dominate after the break and did pull a goal back
during the middle of the second half when midfielder Clinton Mola found
the net following a strong run.
Time appeared to have run out when Tariq Lamptey, who had conceded the
earlier spot-kick, finished superbly with practically the last kick of the
game to the joy of the Chelsea fans present. A point was no more than we
deserved and it returns us to the top of the PL2 table.
For today's starting line-up, Andy Myers was without Juan Castillo, who
had played in all four development squad games prior to this one. The
winger left on loan earlier in the day with Ajax his destination. In
central defence Rudiger lined up alongside captain Marc Guehi who was
fresh from his first call-up into the England Under-21 squad in the
morning.

The first sniff at goal was for Chelsea, but Charlie Brown was crowded out
before he could shoot. Instead it was the north Londoners who went ahead
with just 10 minutes played when Patterson finished low past Jamie Cumming
from a ball in from the right. It needed a strong wrist from the Chelsea
keeper to prevent Rodel Richards from doubling the Spurs lead soon after.
However Tottenham were still the next team to find the net, and they did
so from the penalty spot with 20 minutes played. Tariq Lamptey was the
player judged to have made a foul, on winger Shilow Tracey, a decision our
full-back who was called up by England Under-20s today certainly disagreed
with. White converted the penalty comfortably.
In our first attack since going behind, Thierno Ballo curled wide with a
shot he had to hurry. It began a good spell of pressure by Chelsea. George
McEachran began to get on the ball in midfield and Rudiger rose high to
meet a corner but there was no one on the end of his knock-down.

George McEachran on the ball
Tino Anjorin worked himself space and smashed a shot that took a
deflection for a Blues corner which again was reached first by Rudiger.
His header into the danger zone was met by the head of Charlie Brown but
unfortunately the young striker sent it over.
Rudiger was certainly making his presence felt as an attacking force and
his powerful surge set up Anjorin but the shot was blazed too high. That
was just before half-time.

Captain Marc Guehi sends the ball forward
We continued after the restart in the same vein, playing on the front foot
and pushing Spurs back. Brown sent a 56th-minute header off target and was
only a whisker away from getting a stretched-out boot to Tariq Uwakwe's
searching cross.
Ball after ball was being delivered in from out wide and when Uwakwe met
one cleanly, Alfie Whitman in the Spurs goal made a very good save.
Instead it was from an attack straight down the middle that a Chelsea goal
finally came. Mola drove through the heart of the Spurs defence past two
challenges and rifled in a low finish. That made it 2-1 to Spurs with just
under 20 minutes to go.

Clinton Mola fires in the first Chelsea goal
The visitors then survived a Guehi header on target and then a shot
following a goalmouth scramble by the same player.
A late Chelsea effort came from Uwakwe after a move he started by catching
Spurs dozing. After that, it needed a good Cumming save and then some
strong running by Rudiger, who was demonstrating his fitness in added
time, to prevent our opponents landing a sucker punch.
How important those two moments proved when the pacy Lamptey showed skill
out wide and struck a low fizzer from distance to rescue a point.

PL2 reaction: Andy Myers assesses fightback against Spurs and Toni
Rudiger's impact
01 Sep 2019
The men's first team were not the only side to be involved in a 2-2 draw
in their latest game but in contrast to Frank Lampard's side, it was our
development squad which came back from two goals down at half-time with
the second equaliser scored very late on.

The opposition at Aldershot were Tottenham and the competition was the
PL2. Manager of our dev squad side Andy Myers has given his reaction to
the game to the official Chelsea website.
'It was a very well-deserved point but it was a slow start,' he said. 'The
game plan didn't change, the tactics were the same, but we didn't
implement it with the intensity we should have. We got better midway
through the first half but we were 2-0 down by then so there were a few
harsh words at half-time and we got a response, but you are lucky if you
keep getting it back. I know we have good players but when you step up a
level you don't get those 2-0 leads back.
'But our heads didn't go down. This is one thing with the group, their
mentality is very strong. They come into training every day with a work
ethic to do well. There is a massive buzz around the club and they sense
it as well. I am not saying that they didn't last year but they know what
they need to play for and midway through the first half at two down we
still dug deep and still got back into it, and looked better. To come out
in the second half and dominate the way we did is very pleasing but
overall I am disappointed in the same breath as well.'
The Chelsea goals came from midfielder Clinton Mola and full-back Tariq
Lamptey…
'There were two very good goals,' says Myers. 'Clinton Mola made an
exceptional run and showed exceptional composure to then slot it home and
it was needed. With 25 minutes to go we were thinking right, we are going
to get another one. Tariq Lamptey's was an exceptional piece of skill on
the edge of the box, a little cut back and a left-foot finish and to take
that opportunity with his left, I am really pleased for him to get the end
product for all that work he does going forward.'
Toni Rudiger played the full game and demonstrated his return to full
fitness…
'It is great we get senior players come and play with the younger boys,
they have a mentality and the two times he has played for us his attitude
has been spot on. He wants to get fit, he wants to get back into the men's
first team. You can see that and it shows our boys the way to always
approach things.'

One member of the dev squad, Juan Castillo, has moved on loan for senior
football experience at Ajax, in a league Myers knows well from his time
coaching at Vitesse…
'It is a great move for him, it is where he came from and for development
it is a very good league for him. We know Ajax and their mentality to
bring young players through but he has been developed by us for a while so
it is quite a complement that Ajax want to take him back as well, based on
all he has been learning under us.'
On the morning of the Tottenham game, Myers' captain Marc Guehi was called
up to the England Under-21 squad for the first time…
'Marc has been exceptional at the start of this season,' says the coach.
'He has grown up a little and in his performances he has been there or
thereabout and I am pleased for him. It is no more than he deserved and
his performances have shown that. He and Toni led by example in the
centre of defence in this game. They kept going, kept driving on and
showed composure and defended well.'
