The Premier League, its shareholders and academy managers have agreed on a points-per-game system to decide the final league standings following the curtailment of the season back in May, with Chelsea's unbeaten development squad unmoved at the top of the table. The team had four matches of the campaign remaining. Andy Myers's side become the third PL2 champions after its restructure and introduction at the start of the 2016/17 season, with this our second title at this level after our Under-21s were crowned champions of the Premier League competition back in 2013/14. https://i.imgur.com/3zRR16F.jpg
The Premier League used the same points-per-game system to decide the final standings in the Under-18 Premier League. The outcome means Ed Brand's side narrowly miss out on the southern section title as runners-up, with near neighbours Fulham taking top spot. In the northern section, Manchester City have been named champions and the Premier League have also announced that there will be no national final. The Premier League statement reads: 'Chelsea have been crowned 2019/20 Champions of Premier League 2 Division 1 with West Ham United securing promotion as Division 2 Champions and Manchester United also promoted as runners-up. 'Following the curtailment of the Academy Games Programme for Season 2019/20, Clubs today agreed to determine the final standings using a Points Per Game system. 'Using this methodology, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been relegated from Division 1. In Division 2, runners up Manchester United will join West Ham in promotion to the top tier of Premier League 2. 'Due to the curtailed season, Clubs were unable to complete the play-off fixtures. It was therefore agreed the Division 2 Champions and second-placed team would both be promoted to Division 1 for Season 2020/21. 'The Points Per Game solution has also been applied to the Under 18 Premier League, the Under 18 Professional Development League and the Professional Development League (U23 Category 2 teams). 'Fulham have been crowned Under 18 Premier League South Champions, and Manchester City Champions of the Under 18 Premier League North. Despite the National play-off match not being able to be played, based on Points Per Game, Manchester City have been crowned overall Under 18 National Champion and gained qualification for the UEFA Youth League. 'Millwall finished Champions in the PDL South at both Under 23 and Under 18 age groups, while Nottingham Forest have been crowned Champions of PDL North. Wigan Athletic are Champions of Under 18 PDL North. 'Premier League Shareholders today also agreed to curtail the Premier League International Cup, the Premier League Cup and the U18 Premier League Cup, without a winner being awarded. 'Premier League Academy Games Programme 2020/21 Update: Next season will see some changes to the structure of PL2 Division 1 and 2. Three new Category 1 Academies – Burnley, Crystal Palace and Leeds United – will enter Division 2 for the next season, meaning Division 1 will comprise 13 teams and Division 2 will comprise 14 teams.' -In other Chelsea Academy news, one member of our 2019/20 Under-18 squad, goalkeeper Nicolas Tie, has joined Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal on a permanent transfer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2020/08/06/ andy-myers-following-pl2-title-success Andy Myers: Pleased for the players, staff and everyone in the Academy following PL2 title success 06 Aug 2020 Coach Andy Myers is happy to finally have the development squad named Premier League 2 champions after what has been a very difficult time for all. https://i.imgur.com/nK8kl14.jpg
A decision to curtail academy competitions was made back in March following the coronavirus pandemic making it unsafe for the season to continue. The young Blues were today awarded the title by the Premier League after its shareholders and academy managers agreed on a points-per-game system to decide the final league standings. For Chelsea our position remained the same as the Blues were unmoved at the top of the pile. The boss is pleased to learn of the season's outcome which he feels will lift all in the Academy. 'I'm really pleased that we've won the league title, especially as nobody knew what was happening, understandably due to more important world matters,' he told the official Chelsea website. 'It's long overdue and I'm really pleased for the players, coaching staff and everyone in the Academy as it's a feeling that we haven't had for a little while. https://i.imgur.com/Fh0WYDl.jpg
'When I think back to pre-season this time last year, we had a small squad, quite a young squad too, in terms of experience at this level, and the main focus was to keep players fit as they would have to play across a few competitions. I've got to give credit to the strength and conditioning staff and the medical staff who made sure preparations were done in the morning and worked hard on injury-prevention tactics, which was something we focused on in the previous campaign - and most importantly the players all bought into it.' One of the main purposes of an Academy and its Under-23 side is to develop players for the future, something which Myers feels strongly about, but he also believes the winning mentality is deeply rooted within the foundations of Cobham. 'Neil [Bath] has always made sure that our Academy stands for player development, and as coach you are more than happy having players who give 100 per cent in training and in matches as they are improving day-by-day, you may not get the reward of trophies at times but it's about the development process for us. If we win competitions along the way, as we have this season, it's a bonus. 'There's a winning mentality within the Academy which starts from the Under-9s and by the time those players get to Under-23 level it becomes real life as there are leagues and competitions to play for. The last time we won the title at this level was in 2013/14 with Dermot Drummy, I've still got the picture up of him holding the cup, and I think winning it this year means a lot for the club as we continue to create a pathway for players.'
