Our head coach has had to be patient with his players so far in 2020/21, with some of last season's best performers and several of the new additions to his squad missing the start of the campaign through injury and having to be gradually brought into the fold. However, we have seen many of them being introduced in recent weeks and with Hakim Ziyech joining Christian Pulisic in the squad for tomorrow's match against Southampton Lampard is pleased with the wealth of talent now at his disposal, particularly in attacking areas, regardless of any selection dilemmas. 'Any team that wants to compete towards the top of the league or the Champions League and play in the FA Cup and go through a season needs more than one player per position,' he explained. 'It needs to be competitive across the front area and we had it last year. 'We lost Willian, we lost Pedro, we lost Batshuayi, but we've brought in players who bring the same level of competition in terms of numbers and I feel like the quality levels and some of the options we brought in, of course you bring them in because you want to improve. https://i.imgur.com/QEUewlO.jpg
Ziyech is in contention to make his debut against Southampton 'It's up to the players of course, it will always remain up to them in terms of their performance, and at the same time it gives me nice problems in terms that we can hopefully be selecting players, we can use them through the season, we'll have options to come off the bench. So I'm happy with what some people might want to call a problem in that area.' He also underlined how important it is to now be getting the majority of his squad ready to take part in full training, allowing him to work on integrating the new players closer with their team-mates at Cobham. 'If you're bringing in players, you're always looking to build relationships on the pitch, whether it be full-backs and wingers, strikers and people playing behind them, midfielders in combinations, centre-backs, goalkeeper with his back four. 'Those things can only be worked on and we didn't have a lot of these players fit and ready, the ones that we brought in. Now we're seeing that they're starting to get fit, we're getting some time on the training ground, the relationships on and off the pitch can grow. I hope that we'll keep working. https://i.imgur.com/ypkcMQx.jpg
'We've got a lot of work to do, we're not the end product. There are other teams that showed last year and the last two or three years how long it takes, the work that it takes to become top teams in the world and we have to do it in our own way. We're in pretty much the start of that journey in a lot of ways. The work has begun and it continues all the time to keep trying to improve.' Despite the new signings coming into the side, Lampard stressed that the door is never closed for any player in his squad, as he will select his team based on performances in matches and training, meaning with hard work there is a way back into the team for players like Toni Rudiger who haven't featured so far. 'Every player can play their way into the starting XI, that's in every player's hands,' said Lampard. 'That's how I work here. The things I do are always in the best interests of the team and what's best for the club because we're trying to get results every week. 'The players all know that and the beauty of the window being shut is that we can get to work and know what the squad is. Everybody knows that they can contribute and we'll need them and rely on them because of the amount of games we play. Toni's the same as every other player on that one.' We host Southampton at Stamford Bridge in our first fixture for two weeks due to the international break, but Lampard was pleased to see his players getting additional game time with their countries to help with match fitness and hopes those who performed well will return to club duty full of confidence. https://i.imgur.com/XDssnkR.jpg
James started his first game for England during the international break 'I think Reece [James] had a fantastic debut, Mason [Mount] gets his goal and contributed in those two games that he played. Where players have not really had pre-season games or had enough minutes on the pitch, I'm actually happy. Sometimes you might bemoan the fact that a player might go away and play three 90 minutes or big minutes in games when they're away because you're kind of selfish and want them for Chelsea. At the moment our players need games so I'm pleased for the ones who have played.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2020/10/17/ lampard-praises-james-s--phenomenal-progress--and-expresses-grat Lampard praises James's 'phenomenal progress' and expresses gratitude for Ziyech's important minutes with Morocco 17 Oct 2020 Frank Lampard has been discussing the international involvement of two of his players over the past week as we prepare to face Southampton in the Premier League, one who made his national team debut and the other who could make his for Chelsea today... https://i.imgur.com/hwTbSDO.jpg
Club managers can cut frustrated figures in the days following an international break, with players sporadically reporting back for club duty often complaining of fatigue and fitness concerns. However, Frank Lampard was pleased with the weeks enjoyed by Reece James and Hakim Ziyech with England and Morocco respectively as he looked back on their time away. James was initially part of the England Under-21 squad before injuries in Gareth Southgate's group opened the door for his first senior call-up. The defender made his debut as a second-half substitute against Belgium and then started the meeting with Denmark three days later, where he was viewed by many observers as the Three Lions' outstanding performer. His red card for dissent to the referee after the final whistle proved a sour note to end what had been a very promising camp for the 20-year-old and Lampard admitted he was hardly surprised at the youngster's swift adaptation to senior international football. 'I thought his performance was very good,' said James's club boss. 'I sort of expect that because I expect a lot from Reece, although you should probably never expect that on a full debut. 'He showed his comfort in the game against Belgium before that when he came on, where it looked like he'd been playing for a long time, and his performance against Denmark was also really good. 'His progress has been phenomenal. It was when he played at Wigan in the Championship - I followed him closely and tried to take him to Derby in the January window but it didn't happen. I've always been a big fan of his in terms of his. https://i.imgur.com/XDssnkR.jpg
James impressed on his full England debut 'There are things he'll want to improve in his game and the great thing about Reece and a lot of the other younger players at the club is that they're very open to that and they want to improve all the time. He has great natural talent, great physical attributes, can be worked on and he's going to be a fantastic player for this club for a long time.' Lampard did have a quiet word with James on his return to Cobham this week about the circumstances of his dismissal, England's second of the night, although it was hardly cause for major concern in the head coach's eyes. 'I did have a word with him about the end and the fact he got involved with the referee,' continued Lampard. 'We're all human. I've been there and done it as a player and maybe as a manager as well. 'None of us are saints but it will definitely be one for him to learn from. When you have a performance of that level playing for your country you'll get a lot of plaudits and there was no need for him to get involved with the referee after. It was a pretty simple conversation and something he'll definitely take on board.' Ziyech was another of Lampard's players who enjoyed match minutes on the international stage during the break, something that surprised some onlookers given the wideman has yet to feature competitively for the Blues following a knee injury sustained during our pre-season game at Brighton. However, Lampard has revealed a 30-minute cameo in a friendly against Senegal last Friday was carefully planned between club, country and player. The boss confirmed in his Friday press conference that Ziyech was 'fit enough to participate in some way, we hope' against Southampton today. 'I was pleased with it,' said Lampard about the 27-year-old's involvement. 'We had an open conversation going into it where Hakim spoke to me and I know he had close conversations with their manager. https://i.imgur.com/EbGH9Fz.jpg
Ziyech hasn't featured since our pre-season game at Brighton 'If he was going to stay behind, I was looking at getting him minutes in a game behind closed doors but that is difficult for us because of the bubble we have at the moment. The ideal result was that he played 30 minutes for his country, which was exactly what he needed at that time, and he came back and did some more training with us so it worked out well.'
