Jorginho was born in Brazil to a family with Italian ancestry before moving to Italy in pursuit of a professional football career in his teens. With Palmeiras traditionally being the team supported by Brazilians from Italian backgrounds, our midfielder was asked what memories he has of the club from his early years growing up in the country. He revealed that he could once have ended up playing for them, with the fact that he now lines up against them for Chelsea in Abu Dhabi demonstrating the almost surreal journey professional football can take. 'Let me tell me something not a lot of people know. The connection I have with Palmeiras is that I trialled for the team when I was 12 years old and I didn't make the team,' he explained. 'So, honestly, that's the only memory of Palmeiras that I have. https://i.imgur.com/v3hiPLj.jpg
In action in the 1-0 semi-final win over Al Hilal 'That's what football is about. We are here about 18 years later to compete in a Club World Cup final against Palmeiras. It's crazy, but it's also why football is so beautiful. Everything happens for a reason, so perhaps it was better this way.' Jorginho also admitted that rejection was tough to take at such a young age, but he will take some motivation from the childhood disappointment onto the pitch in this final. 'I think it's only natural for any human being to have that, it's no different for me. Anything I can seek to give me motivation and to help me find the energy to fight, that's what I'll do.' One advantage from growing up in Brazil coming into this tournament is that he knows exactly how huge the Club World Cup is in that country, with Jorginho and fellow Brazilians Thiago Silva and Kenedy helping the coaching staff underline to the rest of the squad just how motivated Palmeiras will be with their large and passionate following. https://i.imgur.com/9HWk2rp.jpg
Chelsea's Brazilian contingent take a stroll around the team's Abu Dhabi base with the rest of the squad 'What we've been trying to do is talk to our team-mates and try to show how important this match and this tournament is for Brazilian football,' he added. 'The coaches also showed us a video of Palmeiras leaving the country, as our players here may not be aware of how important this competition is in Brazil, just so that it gives us a better sense of it and helps us generate this motivation in us so that we can achieve this victory, which is so important.' However, the 30-year-old also insisted that the large number of Palmeiras supporters who have made the journey to Abu Dhabi are very welcome, as he is looking forward to the great atmosphere they can help provide at the Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium tomorrow. 'Feeling that energy of a Brazilian fanbase, I think there's nothing negative about it. That's also what makes football beautiful – to feel that atmosphere, to feel that environment of a final is wonderful. https://i.imgur.com/0LTvx02.jpg
Palmeiras supporters have arrived in Abu Dhabi in large numbers 'Honestly, I think this will only help to motivate both teams, so I think it will be a beautiful spectacle.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------- https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2022/02/12/ jorginho-wants--amazing--winning-feeling Jorginho wants 'amazing' winning feeling 12 Feb 2022 Jorginho says the opportunity to win a trophy provides its own motivation ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup final, but knows we cannot take anything for granted against Palmeiras. https://i.imgur.com/O7fWnhx.jpg
The midfielder is no stranger to success, having followed up last season's Champions League triumph with Chelsea by becoming a key part of the Italy side which won Euro 2020 over the summer, before adding the UEFA Super Cup to his Blues medal haul and receiving the UEFA Men's Player of the Year award. However, he says he will never get bored of the feeling he gets when lifting a trophy, explaining his desire to keep enjoying moments like that is the main motivation which keeps pushing him to succeed. 'It is a dream. The feeling is good, so that's why everyone keeps working hard trying to win more, because the feeling is good and we like it,' he explained. 'That's why we keep pushing all the time and working even harder to bring more trophies home, because it's the best thing you can do and we do it for us, for our families, for the supporters, for the club, for everyone. https://i.imgur.com/dL99D6Y.jpg
The Champions League was the first of three trophies Jorginho has won in the last nine months 'The feeling is just amazing. It's like a dream because you work for that and then when it happens you just feel amazing and proud of yourself, proud of your team, proud of everyone who was involved and just thankful.' Jorginho also discussed Chelsea's inevitable status as favourites for the Club World Cup final in many people's eyes, as the European champions, insisting we need to find the right balance in being confident in our own ability while respecting the quality of our opponents. 'I think Chelsea of course can win this trophy, we just need to be focused, be humble and be prepared to work hard because it is not going to be an easy game against a difficult opponent. 'We have a lot of respect for Palmeiras because it's not by chance that they're here. They were able to win an important title and it's only one match, anything can happen. We know that very well. The biggest mistake would be for us to go onto the pitch believing that we are the favourites. https://i.imgur.com/aqSyGGC.jpg
'You have to know your qualities, you have to be aware of what you're capable of, but without ever disrespecting your opponent because they also have their own qualities. This is a match where anything can happen and we are extremely focused on doing the best job that we can do.' -- "Fighting the war on drugs... one brutality case at a time."
