The 20-year-old full-back impressed in his debut campaign in the second tier on loan at Coventry City last season, where he was named the club's Young Player of the Year after making 42 appearances in all competitions. Alternating between left-back and a more attacking role on the wing over the course of the season, Maatsen was a key player for the Sky Blues as they made an early challenge for a play-off spot before finishing in mid-table. https://i.imgur.com/WpCWH3h.jpg

Maatsen scored three goals in the Championship last season with Coventry It was the Dutch youngster's second season in senior football, following a loan with League One side Charlton Athletic the previous year, where he played 35 games as the Addicks narrowly missed out on the play-offs, again showing his versatility by featuring in various positions from midfield to right-wing, as well as his natural left-back role. It was in that position Maatsen thrived during two years playing in the Chelsea Academy after joining from PSV Eindhoven in his native Netherlands in the summer of 2018, catching the eye both with his attacking intent and defensive solidity. He cemented a place at the back for our development squad in 2019/20, captaining the team on several occasions, and scored in the FA Youth Cup as we thrashed Wolves 7-0. Earlier that season, he made his senior debut for the Blues aged 17, as a substitute in our Carabao Cup victory over Grimsby Town, and signed a new four-year contract on his 18th birthday. Maatsen will now spend another season in the Championship with Burnley, who are managed by Vincent Kompany and targeting promotion at the first attempt following their relegation from the Premier League last term. Meanwhile, versatile Academy defender Bashir Humphreys has signed a new contract with Chelsea, committing him to the club until at least 2024. He had a deal agreed until 2024 before the sanctions hit the club and now he's finally signed it.
