Thomas Tuchel has admitted “nobody wants to touch” the Chelsea No 9
shirt vacated by Romelu Lukaku because of a “curse” that stretches back
to the days of Fernando Torres.
“It's cursed, it's cursed, people tell me it's cursed,” he said. “It's
not the case that we leave it open for tactical reasons, for some players
in the pipeline that come in and naturally take it.
“There was not a big demand for No 9. Players sometimes want to change
numbers but, surprisingly, nobody wants to touch it. Everybody who is
longer than me in the club tells me: 'Ah, you know, like he had the 9 and
he did not score and he had the 9 and did also not score.' So we now we
have a moment where nobody wants to touch the No 9.”

The manager was asked whether he would like to sign a striker, after
refusing to comment on Aubameyang, who he managed at Borussia Dortmund.
“Let's see and check it out,” he said. “We come from this curse of No
9; I'm also superstitious, I can understand why players maybe don't touch
it and have other preferences. It's like this, but I think Raheem
[Sterling] will help us a lot and in general it's our responsibility to
create more offensive positions to have maybe a bit more players in the
box.”
Chelsea are expected to step up their pursuit of the Leicester defender
Wesley Fofana after their ￡60m offer was rejected this week but Tuchel
said he had been focusing on Saturday's trip to Everton after what he
described as a “turbulent” summer of transfer dealings working with the
co-owner and stand-in director of football, Todd Boehly.
“You can get lost in all these names and opportunities and suddenly you
end up playing a 2-7-1 or whatever,” he said. “You need to refocus and
have a cold shower and calm down – or I have to – and then you go: 'OK,
let's go back where we needed. What do we need for the squad and what kind
of personality and what kind of talent do we need?' And this is how it
more or less goes.”
Tuchel added: “It was quite turbulent as well in here, I have to say. It
was important with the new season starting: do we still try something? No.
It's Everton now and that process has helped everybody to calm down.
Seeing that we are succeeding in the market also calmed me down and
there's been give and take for everybody. The strength of Chelsea is
calmness from inside and also outside and we need to reach that status
again.”

The transfer window remains open but with the season about to begin,
Thomas Tuchel has been reviewing the Chelsea trading so far, and whether
it has panned out the way it was planned.

With working under a government licence at the end of last season and
undergoing a change of ownership, there was a hold-up before firm
intentions could be put in place and then negotiations for players could
begin. Tuchel describes what has followed as at times 'quite turbulent'
but he is pleased with the outcome.
'We agreed to try for a small number of names very early,' he details.
'Then the amount of names got a bigger, the amount of names we discussed
was endless, and it was sometimes a bit confusing and distracting, but in
the end we managed to focus back on the names we mentioned in the first
place, and to stay calm and not get distracted. Sometimes you think an
opportunity comes up but it's somebody using us to get a better contract
somewhere else,' he explained.

Sterling and Koulibaly could both feature against Everton
'Then it was business as usual for any transfer period, you try for some
players and you don't succeed. What makes me very happy is that every
player we signed we absolutely wanted, and we wanted very early, even if
very early for was being late in the market. We decided very early these
could be ones to improve our squad and then we have these players now, so
that's very promising.'
Tuchel jokes that when directly involved in working through the names and
the possibilities, there was the danger of ending up having to select a
highly unbalanced 2-7-1 formation. He laughs as he says that is the point
to have a cold shower, calm down and refocus on exactly what is needed.
'What was very obvious from the beginning and was proved right is the
ambition from Todd [Boehly] and Behdad [Eghbali] especially to do things
right for Chelsea and for this team. It's very ambitious, they're hard
working and they demand it from everybody, so that was not a problem, but
it was sometimes turbulent and it was sometimes also distracting and it
was not 100 per cent calm.
'So what helped was time, what helped was being back at Cobham, because it
calms everybody down because it's our environment. We know what we're
doing now to prepare for our match.

'Seeing that we succeed in transfer market also calmed me down, so it was
like a give and take for for everybody. It is what we want because the
strengths of Chelsea was that it was calm not only from inside but also
from outside, and we have to do everything to reach this status again.
'We try to refocus this week completely on Everton and I feel the team
focused and everybody calmed down, and I'm convinced that we are ready to
compete with Everton for the win.'

Thomas Tuchel says Chelsea may still need another central defender in the
transfer market after admitting to using cold showers to handle the heat
of the club's summer business.
Speaking at Cobham on Friday, Tuchel explained why Chelsea backed out of a
deal for now Barcelona defender Jules Kounde but still want one more to
come in.
“That [Cesar] Azpi[licueta] stayed, in actually the best position for
Jules Kounde, these talks had an effect and it's also the position of
Trevoh Chalobah if we play in a back three,” Tuchel told reporters.
“Marc [Cucurella] can play in a back three on the left, Kalidou
[Koulibaly] can play on the left of a three. Thiago Silva, who is not
Benjamin Button and not getting younger, unfortunately, even though
sometimes it seems like it.

“Maybe we bring one more player, maybe not. Still, we have Malang Sarr
with us and Ethan Ampadu still with us. We have options but at the same
time, we know how many games are coming. So let's see if we can sign a
