Dignity is not a word often used in relation to football and certainly not in
reference to managers, but Ranieri is a rare example of a coach who, despite
being under intense pressure and the focus of constant speculation, manages to
maintain a polite, good-humoured and effortlessly charming persona.
While undeniably gifted, astute and, more importantly, successful, both
Ferguson and Wenger are little short of poisonous in comparison to Ranieri, who
is always generous in defeat and affords officials and opponents a respect
his peers seldom articulate.
Perhaps Ranieri will adopt this undoubtedly effective, but particularly ugly
tactic, in the coming months, but for now Chelsea's players play with a smile
on their faces and with a team spirit which is built on respect not anger.
While United and Arsenal continue to whine and whinge about each other, the FA,
the media and whatever else irks them, they will continue to lose the respect
and support of the neutrals who are being drawn to the style and
professionalism of Chelsea.
