While Eddy Curry is in Los Angeles today hoping to get final clearance to
resume playing, the Bulls will be in the process of bringing in players to
try out for summer-league roster spots.
Curry, who has been sidelined since March 30 with heart-related problems,
is consulting with cardiologist David Cannom, who already has green-lighted
Curry's return after examining test results. The Bulls wanted Cannom to see
Curry face-to-face.
"We hope to clear [Curry] to resume exercise,'' Bulls operations chief John
Paxson said. "We need to get Dr. Cannom's recommendation. He is the one who is
going to clear him.
''But we need him to give us a course of action. Then our doctors will have
to evaluate it and sign off on it.''
That's just part of the process the Bulls must deal with in assessing Curry'
s future with the team. Curry becomes a restricted free agent tonight, and the
Bulls must decide if they want to invest a lucrative, long-term contract in a
player they may not be totally convinced is healthy. Insurance is expected to
be a problem.
Other teams, however, may force the Bulls' hand if they offer Curry a big-
dollar deal.
Paxson will offer all of his restricted free agents, including Tyson
Chandler, Chris Duhon and Jannero Pargo, qualifying offers to ensure they
will be able to match what other teams offer.
One undrafted free agent the Bulls are excited about bringing in is Eddie
Basden, a 6-5 senior guard from North Carolina-Charlotte.
"He's a young guy that we feel fell through the cracks,'' Paxson said. "He
fits what we're looking for in terms of a defensive two guard. So we are
going to bring him in.''
Basden averaged 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.2 steals this season as the
Conference USA Player of the Year.
Basden is one of four players Paxson will bring in Friday for workouts,
perhaps leading to invitations to the Bulls' summer-league team that will
compete in the Las Vegas tournament. Training-camp invites may follow.
Others who will be working out include Drago Pasalic, a 6-11 Croatian
forward; former Bulls draft pick Mario Austin; Kasib Powell; and reserve
center Jared Reiner.
