BANKS Staff Reporter Advertisement Bulls restricted free-agent center Eddy Curry returned from Atlanta on Friday with a smile on his face and maybe even an offer to consider. Curry is the only free agent the Hawks have brought in, reflecting a genuine interest by general manager Billy Knight. ''Billy would not have brought Eddy in if he was not really interested in him ,'' a league source said. ''Remember that they have tendered a five-year, $70 million offer to [Phoenix Suns restricted free agent] Joe Johnson without having him to come in or take any physical. ''Billy is telling friends that he is confident that Eddy will pass the physical. He is more concerned about whether Eddy will be able to stay in shape , work hard and bring game every night than he is concerned about whether there will be problems getting his contract insured [because of Curry's irregular heartbeat].'' Curry's agent, Leon Rose, is hoping to get a multiyear deal paying Curry between $8 million and $10 million a year. What is uncertain is whether Knight at least put in an opening bid while Bulls operations chief John Paxson apparently is waiting to make sure Curry's heart is insured. The Hawks still have some $12 million worth of salary-cap room left for Curry after the Johnson offer. ''I have no comment about contract negotiations,'' Paxson said Friday when asked if the reports were true that the Bulls have not made a contract offer to Curry. He also offered no reaction to Curry's visit, saying, ''Our free agents are free to visit and talk with other teams.''
