'Amnesty' could lead Mavs' Finley to Bulls' doorstep July 23, 2005 BY LACY J. BANKS Staff Reporter Advertisement The possibility of Dallas Mavericks veteran Michael Finley finishing his career playing for his hometown Bulls is no longer farfetched, thanks to an amnesty provision that will be part of the NBA's new six-year labor contract . The provision allows money remaining on players' contracts to count against the salary cap but not against the luxury tax. Teams with payrolls far over the anticipated salary cap -- such as the Mavericks, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers -- could save millions in the dollar-for-dollar penalty for money spent over the tax threshold. The labor contract will become official Thursday. When the deal becomes official, free agents can start signing contracts and teams can start eyeing talented, expensive veterans, whom teams will start releasing through the amnesty provision. Finley, 32, is a prime candidate for "amnesty.'' The Mavericks would still pay him $51 million for the next three years, so money shouldn't be a huge issue. If the Maywood native felt like coming home to a playoff team, the timing would seem to be perfect. "If something were to happen to enable me to come home and finish my career with the Bulls, that would be nice,'' Finley has said. "I would have loved to have been a teammate of Michael Jordan. But that's always been something beyond my control.'' Finley, a 6-7 guard, is recuperating from surgery on his right ankle. Bulls operations chief John Paxson can't comment on any player still under contract. But Finley would qualify under Paxson's policy for rebuilding the Bulls. "We're always in the market for quality players who can make us a better team,'' Paxson said Wednesday. Finley's defense has never been strong, and his lift has been lowered by accumulating injuries. But he could be a good scorer coming off the bench. Finley averaged 15.7 points and 4.1 rebounds playing 64 games last season. Besides Finley, other possible "amnesty'' candidates are Lakers forward Brian Grant, with $30 million left on his contract; 76ers forward Chris Webber , with $62.1 million left on his deal; and Toronto Raptors guard Jalen Rose, who has $32.6 million left on his contract.
