Bulls will match offer for Duhon

As expected, the Bulls have decided to match the three-year, $9.07 million
offer sheet guard Chris Duhon signed with the Toronto Raptors, but plan on
waiting until the deadline late this afternoon before officially doing so, a
team source said Sunday.
''You never know what might happen, so that's the reason for waiting until
the end of the day,'' the source said. ''But unless something really
unforeseen happens, [the offer sheet] will be matched.''
Bringing Duhon, a rookie who started 73 games last season, back into the
fold is just the first move in what Bulls operations chief John Paxson hopes
will be a busy week.
At some point today, veteran free-agent Brian Grant -- who was waived by
the Los Angeles Lakers last week under the NBA's ''amnesty'' rule -- was
expected to decide where he will to play this season. As of Sunday night,
Grant, 33, had narrowed his choices to two or three teams with the Bulls
seriously in the mix.
''John Paxson and [coach] Scott [Skiles] made a great presentation to
Brian about what his role would be and how he would fit in,'' said Mark
Bartelstein, Grant's agent. ''I've received calls from about 20 teams for Brian
and it's a tough call for him. The Bulls are definitely one of the teams he's
considering.''
With Duhon's offer sheet calling for a first-year salary of $2.8 million,
the Bulls have $2.2 million left of their $5 million mid-level exception to
make an offer to Grant. Other teams have more money to spend, but that probably
won't be the deciding factor considering the Lakers still owe Grant nearly all
of the $29.8 million that remained on his contract.
On Tuesday, Paxson plans to fly to California to meet with forward Tyson
Chandler and his agent, Jeffrey Schwartz. Because Bulls chairman Jerry
Reinsdorf also will be in California for some baseball meetings, he is
expected to sit in on the get-together.
Like Duhon, Chandler is a restricted free agent, meaning the Bulls have
the right to match any offer from another team. Because Paxson has repeatedly
said that's precisely what he will do, none of the Bulls restricted free
agents -- a group that also includes center Eddy Curry and guard Jannero Pargo
-- have received much interest from other teams.
''I want to be able to sit down with Tyson and tell him what we're thinking
and try to get a deal done,'' Paxson said Sunday. ''Unfortunately, the way this
process has worked, a lot of the restricted guys haven't gotten much attention
in the market.''
At this point in the free-agent period, most of the teams capable of making
an offer for the big money Chandler is seeking have used up their salary cap
room, so his best bet is working out a deal with the Bulls.
It's doubtful, though, the Bulls would be willing to strike a deal in the
six-year, $60 million range that Chandler is seeking without making part of the
deal based on incentives. Chandler, 22, was a key contributor to last season's
success, but averaged just eight points (along with 9.7 rebounds) and would
paid on potential rather than production.
Paxson will meet this week with Curry's agent, Leon Rose, to discuss his
status, a source said.
