Skiles will play hand he’s dealt

It’s not often a team makes a significant trade the night before training
camp begins, but Bulls coach Scott Skiles is ready to take things in stride
when practice begins at the Berto Center this morning.
“I’m pretty basic about that,” Skiles said. “You go out there with the
guys you have. That’s the attitude that I have. We’re going to go out there
(today) and get after it. The guys who show up will be out there playing.”
Asked about his outlook for the season, Skiles expressed concern that the
Bulls don’t take continued improvement for granted.
"If you look at the last couple of years, Memphis had sort of a great year
two years ago and then had a little trouble out of the gate last year,” he
said. “Milwaukee sort of snuck up on people (in 2003-04) and had trouble last
year.
“I think we need to do along the lines of what we did last year. We need to
stay focused on kind of the small things — how we defend and hustle and play
hard. We’re certainly good enough to win our share of games if we do those
things.
“We’ve had a lot of guys have good summers. So there’s no reason to
expect us to take a step back or anything like that with regards to effort and
the way we execute and all those things.”
Chandler ready to start: Tyson Chandler was told of the Eddy Curry trade
just before general manager John Paxson announced it to the media. But earlier
in the night, Chandler had a prophetic statement, since he figures to replace
Curry as the Bulls’ starting center.
“I definitely feel like I’ll be a starter this year,” said Chandler, who
claimed to have added 15 pounds over the summer. “This year I want my role to
be a little bigger.”
Deng at full speed: Luol Deng, who missed the end of last season with a
torn ligament in his right wrist, said he was given full clearance to play
about two weeks ago.
“I’ve been playing for a while,” he said. “I just couldn’t do contact
. I’ve just worked on my game, worked on other stuff.”
Bull horns: The Bulls’ first game against the Knicks this year is Nov. 30
at Madison Square Garden. New York makes only one visit to the United Center on
Jan. 18. ... The late additions to the Bulls’ training camp roster include
former Northwestern point guard Jitim Young, 6-foot-1 guard Omar Cook,
6-9 forward Randy Holcomb and 7-1 center Chris Alexander. The Bulls signed 6-5
shooting guard Eddie Basden and 6-7 forward Kasib Powell after the summer
league.
