The Bulls’ suits understand that The Cap’n has been the most popular player on the team for the last three seasons, and how keeping him part of the organization translates into revenue for them. 3.John Paxson has proven he’s not an idiot. He’s a patient, deliberate general manager who has yet to make a major move without first giving it proper deliberation and finding the logic in the transaction. If you add all of these things together, the answer to this equation is Kirk Hinrich staying a Bull for many more years—via a matched contract offer next summer when Hinrich becomes a restricted free agent. Fans and media are getting antsy about this contract extension, calling for Paxson to do whatever it takes to get something done, but that’s not the way Pax does his work. Even Tyson Chandler, who was signed to a lucrative extension a little over a year ago, was only given obscene amounts of money because a.) Samuel Dalembert, another tall player with a similar skill set, got nearly the exact same contract earlier that summer, and b.) Eddy Curry had already split to New York, and Paxson couldn’t’ justify losing two young seven-foot bodies in one summer. But Paxson even put the Chandler deal off until the time was right to get it done, despite media pressure to extend both him and Curry last summer. (And by the way, we all know how well the Curry thing worked out for Chicago— another situation that required tedious patience.) The same unwearied consideration will be applied to Hinrich’s extension now, as Paxson knows there is much to consider when offering a huge contract to any player. In Kirk’s case, if he waits until next summer, he can get six guaranteed years rather than the maximum of five he can sign for right now. It’ s a win-win for the player in this scenario. Not only that, but the frugal Bulls GM is most likely attempting to give Hinrich what is fair market value, but an agent is going to want a bit more than that because, let’s face it, that’s his (or her) job. T.J. Ford, the other promising point guard from Hinrich’s draft class, also hasn’t been extended, so it’s not like a fair market value has even been established yet. The deadline for extending the Bulls point guard is just a little over two weeks away, but don’t expect anything to get done by then. Paxson just doesn’ t have enough of his dominoes in place yet to make the deal. Once there’s an established monetary value and a smaller gap between what Pax wants to pay and what Kirk wants to make, there will be a Hinrich signature on a contract from the Bulls. In the meantime, Hinrich heads to Kansas University tonight to play a preseason game against Seattle in front of his former home crowd.
