Redick 11th overall in 2006 when some wondered if he had first-round talent. Smith resisted temptations to trade Redick when the shooting guard rarely played his first two years in the NBA. And Smith prodded Redick to improve his body and his game, two factors in him blossoming into a productive player with the Magic. So with the Magic having selected and cultivated Redick and worked with him through his growing pains, Smith isn’t eager now to lose him just as he’s about to hit the prime years of his career. Of course, finances will come into play with the decision of whether or not to keep Redick. The Chicago Bulls offered Redick a three-year, $19 million offer sheet, one that the Magic have the right to match because the shooting guard is a restricted free agent. 2006年的選秀會上，魔術總管Otis Smith在一片質疑聲浪中，用首輪第十一順位把J.J. So at the end of the day, the decision comes down to whether or not it makes (financial) sense for our team.’’ Smith agreed to contract terms with Quentin Richardson on Monday, a deal that uses what was left of the Magic’s mid-level exception. That deal likely ends Matt Barnes’ one-year run in Orlando. There is still a small chance that Barnes could return, but it would have to be for the bi-annual exception ($2 million), which is valued at less than what he was offered by the Magic (roughly $2.6 million). Because the Magic are already a luxury-tax-paying team, Chicago reportedly front-loaded its contract offer to Redick to make it more difficult for Orlando to match. The deal calls for Redick to make approximately $7.5 million in the first year, $6.5 million in the second season and $5 million in the third. Smith admitted that those figures were somewhat surprising, but not surprising considering the improvement that Redick made this season and the toughness that he played with during the playoffs. ``My take on it is that J.J. gives us another asset, but that asset has to make good dollars and sense,’’ Smith said. ``Did he come in a little higher than where we projected his salary to be? Yes, a little bit. Richardson, 30, is primarily a small forward, but he can play shooting guard as well. Because Barnes is still considered in play, the decision for Smith could come down to Redick or Barnes. Whichever one it is will be the 12th player on the roster with only a minimum-salaried third point guard left to still add. ``J.J. went out and did what restricted free agents do.
