[外電][閒聊] The Credit Luol Deng Deserves

If Luol Deng played for the Washington Wizards or Phoenix Suns, he'd be
leading his team in scoring. Same for if he played for Cleveland or
Philadelphia or Sacramento. He's a versatile, intelligent basketball player
that works his butt off and gets along great with his teammates and coaching
staff. He's a guy that any team in the league would love to have were it not
for a contract with three years and $40 million left on it.
Sadly, that contract is all anyone wants to talk about. It seems like any
time Deng's name comes up in a hoops conversation it has something to do with
how the Bulls could never trade him because other teams find his deal too
financially prohibitive. What often gets forgotten is that Deng is actually a
well-rounded guy that earns quite a bit of the money he's paid.
In fact, every player on the Chicago roster and coach on the staff has said
at least once this year how valuable Deng has been to the team's best first
half of a season since the Jordan Era.
"Lu is an unsung hero. He's our glue," said Carlos Boozer. "He's our most
versatile player on offense—can go inside/outside, handle the ball, make
plays for everybody. He's been consistently great all season and has played
what's got to be the most 40-minute games in the NBA. He's our iron man.
"Luol needs a lot more credit for what he does for our team," he added.
But it's not credit he often gets, despite the fact he's third on the team in
scoring, third on the team in rebounding, third on the team in assists, and
one of the better all-around defensive guys on the roster. The Bulls have
been a very good team all season, despite some pretty big injuries. Derrick
Rose gets a lot of props for his role in keeping the team float, but like
Boozer said, Deng deserves his fair share of that credit, too.
The interesting thing is Deng himself doesn't seem to want it.
"Honestly I really don't care (about getting credit). That's really the
truth," Deng admitted. "I'm just happy I've got great teammates that are very
unselfish and that I've got a great coach, and a great staff. Whether I'm
playing bad or good, I'm able to go out there and play, and that's really all
I care about it."
"He's invaluable with all he provides," Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau said.
"Look at all the things he's done—18 points a game, rebounding, defending—
he's a complete player. People overlook what he contributes to our team, but
I know his teammates and the coaching staff certainly appreciate all that he
does. He's a big part of why we're winning."
Deng admitted Thibodeau's coaching has played a pretty significant role in
both his personal success and the success of the team this year.
"Coach is just putting me in a situation to do well," he said. "I'm not the
kind of guy who you just give me the ball and make me go one-on-one. Coach is
making me move out there. I've improved my outside shot a lot, and I'm
getting some more of those outside shots."
Regardless of who's getting the pat on the back, and whether or not the
general hoops-watching public believes Deng is worth the dough, the Bulls
clearly are one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference, and it's the
team success Deng seems to be enjoying most.
"I've been here for a while, and I really believe this is the best team we've
had, just with the commitment we've had night-in and night-out to win and the
sacrifices for each other," Deng said. "I'm having a lot of fun. Our record
says it all, but even when we lose I know that we went out there prepared for
every game. I love that we give it everything."
Deng might be one of the most underrated overpaid guys in the league, but it
doesn't seem to matter to him or any of his teammates. They all know how
important he is to the success the team has had this season. No matter how
good D-Rose has been, this team might not have come out of injuries to Boozer
and Joakim Noah so unscathed were it not for Deng.
