(Derrick) Rose took to (Tom) Thibodeau almost immediately when the two met
last summer. Thibodeau made a couple of things clear at the time. For one, he
would gladly give Rose
greater control on the floor, let him be more of a decision maker and try to
up the tempo to get the Bulls into the open court more and accentuate Rose’s
speed. At the same time,
though, he would also be demanding. Rose would have to play defense hard. He
would have to work hard in practice. He would even have to study film hard.
If Thibodeau was going to make him the leader, Rose would have to go out and
actually lead.
“Thibs is a hard coach to play for,” Rose says. “Practices are very hard;
we watch film every single day. But he teaches you the right way. He holds
you accountable for everything. Every single thing. Especially for the point
guard, for the leader of the team—he told me that from the beginning. I’m
the leader, so he has to stay on me. If something doesn’t go the way he
wants it to go, he is going to come to me because he looks at me like the
leader of the team. It’s hard, but he made sure I knew it’s my role and I
have to accept it.”
He has accepted it —and thrived with it. Rose is averaging 24.7 points per
game, a jump from 20.8 points last year. He was already among the quickest
players in the league and one of the best finishers at the rim, but this year
he has not only honed his existing skills—“He gets to the paint better than
any basketball player alive,” TNT analyst Kenny Smith says—but he has
expanded his game with improved shooting and defense. The Bulls remade their
roster in the offseason, adding star forward Carlos Boozer to a core that
included Rose, center Joakim Noah and forward Luol Deng, but it was the
hiring of Thibodeau that has ignited Rose’s lightning leap this season.
