Bulls' Boozer finds way to make presence felt
He had trouble scoring, but contributed defense, rebounds and assists
INDIANAPOLIS — Carlos Boozer made a grand total of two shots Thursday night.
And you know what? It doesn't bother him.
With an ice-filled bucket up to his ankles, the Bulls forward insisted the
only numbers he cares about are 88-84 (the final score in the victory over
the Pacers) and 3-0 (the Bulls' record in the Eastern Conference
quarterfinals).
"All I care about is winning," he said. "This whole team is like that, and
that's why we're in the position we're in. We don't care about stats."
Over 31-plus minutes, Boozer made just a 15-foot jumper and a fourth-quarter
dunk. He finished with four points, three assists and 11 rebounds.
Boozer, playful and sarcastic after the game, said: "Didn't get any free
throws. Guess I didn't get fouled out there."
Boozer also didn't do much in Game 1, missing 7 of 11 shots from the field.
His Game 2 was far better, a 17-point, 16-rebound effort.
"They're putting size on him," Derrick Rose said, "and they're doubling him.
So it will be tough."
Boozer contributed in crunch time, though. He stole a Darren Collison pass
that led to a fast break and 3-pointer for Kyle Korver that gave the Bulls a
75-70 lead.
"'Booz' made a great steal," Korver said. "He has been a lot more active with
his hands the last couple of games. He had a rough shooting night, but Coach
(Tom Thibodeau) always says: 'If you're not scoring, you have to give us
something.' His activity was a lot better tonight."
It's telling that Thibodeau played Boozer for eight of the game's final nine
minutes.
"Things weren't going his way, but he hung tough," Thibodeau said. "And
that's what you have to do in the playoffs. … Sometimes calls aren't going
your way, sometimes you're in foul trouble, sometimes you're missing shots
you normally make. In the end, you have to have the belief that you can get
it done. And he does."
Boozer shot 0-for-6 during a nightmarish third quarter, missing a lefty dunk.
But he called the game's physical nature "fun … right up my alley. I love
when (the refs) let us play and get down and dirty."
And he certainly had no complaint about game's result: "We're a team. We're
not a one-guy team or a two-guy team. Look at Ronnie Brewer, sitting almost
the whole quarter and then he hits two big free throws for us (with 1.1
seconds left). We have guys who step up every night."
