Thomas appreciates Rose living hometown hero dream
And native Chicagoan knows what it will be like for Wade to play before a
hostile crowd here
Derrick Rose is living the dream, the Chicago dream.
Isiah Thomas, Dwyane Wade, Mark Aguirre, Terry Cummings, Tim Hardaway,
Maurice Cheeks … and many other Chicago-bred current and former NBA stars
must look at Rose with envy.
While those other stars have spent their careers representing other NBA
cities, Rose is able to play for the Bulls and enjoy hometown adulation.
"I couldn't be happier for Derrick Rose right now because he represents
Chicago," Thomas told the Tribune from Miami. "And I'm sure Dwyane feels the
same way, but now (he has) to go beat (the Bulls).
"Without a doubt, Derrick Rose is living all of our childhood dreams because
all of us want to play for our hometown. You want to be in the championship
and be the best player in your hometown.
"We were all Bulls fans. And whenever you were in the NBA, you always kept an
eye on the Bulls because it was your home team."
Growing up on the West Side, Thomas used to stand outside Chicago Stadium,
begging for Bulls players' gym shoes as they exited the arena.
Eventually, the Pistons picked Thomas second overall in the 1981 NBA draft
after the Mavericks had made Aguirre the top choice.
As the face of the hated rival Pistons, Thomas was reviled as a player in
Chicago. Wade can expect much the same treatment in the Eastern Conference
finals between the Bulls and Heat that begins Sunday night at the United
Center.
"It's definitely going to be a different kind of experience because you were
always loved in your hometown," Thomas said of the booing Wade is expected to
receive. "(Wade) definitely will have to be careful because it can throw him
off for a quarter or two. I am sure he has thought about it.
"My family was split in half because some rooted for the Bulls and some
rooted for the Pistons. A lot of nights, my mom was actually rooting for the
Bulls, sometimes more than the Pistons. It's a strange thing.
"You move away, but your family still stays there. While your family roots
for you, personally, they still root for the Bulls.
"It is going to be awkward because (Wade) is going to look up into the stands
and see some of his own family members cheering against him.
"And he got them the tickets!"
