Bulls players, coaches and management were like everybody else who followed their unexpected run: One minute, they were running at full speed. The next, their season was over. Players have scattered for the time being, with guard Keith Bogans undergoing successful arthroscopic right knee surgery to clean up some veteran wear and tear. Coaches have reviewed the Heat series and gathered with management to oversee draft workouts, which began Tuesday at the Berto Center. They are expected to continue intermittently over the next week And management has plunged headfirst into an uncertain offseason, with a possible work stoppage beginning July 1 as a new collective bargaining agreement has yet to be finalized. The Bulls own the 28th and 30th picks in first round of the June 23 draft and the 43rd pick in the second round. At his news conference recognizing theco-Executive of the Year award he shared with Heat President Pat Riley,general manager Gar Forman said the Bulls planned to address perimeter shooting first and foremost this offseason. Forman took a brief look back at the previous season Wednesday. "It was a very, very positive year," Forman said. "I thought our players grew individually. I thought we showed growth as a team. It was great experience for these guys to go deep in the playoffs and get a taste of that." Forman declined to shed light on the Bulls' failures to finish games against the Heat, which included the spectacular collapse in the clinching Game 5. The Bulls led by 12 points with just more than three minutes remaining before the Heat ended their season with an 18-3 run. "I don't think anybody expects to lose when you're competing," Forman said. "Any time a season ends, it seems sudden." The Bulls pursued Trail Blazers shooting guard Rudy Fernandez aggressively all the way until the early stages of last season's training camp before using a combination of Bogans, Ronnie Brewer and Kyle Korver at the position. They also had trade talks centered on the Grizzlies' O.J. Mayo and the Rockets' Courtney Lee near the February trade deadline. So it's likely management will try to upgrade that position this offseason. Bogans started all 82 games and drew widespread praise among teammates and coaches for his defensive acumen and toughness. That he played with — and kept quiet —a knee that needed surgery speaks to that quality. The Bulls have until July 10 to decide whether to pick up the $1,728,000 option on Bogans' salary for next season or it becomes nonguaranteed.
