Management, players confident everyone will stay diligent in offseason workouts
Kyle Korver, Taj Gibson, Omer Asik, C.J. Watson and Jimmy Butler stopped by the
Berto Center to work out Thursday.
On Friday, thanks to the NBA locking out players in lieu of reaching a new
collective bargaining agreement, that building will be off limits to everybody
but management.
"It was strange, man," Korver said by phone. "You see the strength coach
intern, who I worked out with all year. We're friends now. But I can't work out
with him (Friday). It's ridiculous. You're saying goodbye to everyone that's
there, no matter how big their role is."
Somebody who plays one of the biggest roles, coach Tom Thibodeau, made a habit
of drilling players as they dropped in for workouts last summer. Now that
contact is a casualty of the labor strife.
"I asked Thibs what he was going to do, and he said he was going to watch
film," Korver said. "And I was like, 'How much film can you watch? You going to
watch every game again?' And he said, 'Yep.'
"There's nothing that's not planned out that we do. There isn't a drill or
scenario he hasn't gone through in his mind a hundred times. And I'm sure he'll
find many more to think about during this whole thing."
Most league observers believe this lockout might last longer than the most
recent one, which ended on Jan. 6, 1999, and turned that season into a 50-game
sprint. Korver tried to stress the positive, even as he released some
frustration over the lockout and vowed the players union would remain strong.
"(The Bulls) were so well-drilled last season, so a lot of those habits will
come back quickly," Korver said. "I fully expect everyone to be in high gear
during the lockout. We have committed guys. This one might last long, but
whenever we come back, we'll be one of the stronger teams right off the bat.
"Everyone feels like we're in the right. There is no business in the world that
guarantees you a profit every year. Why should your business be that way? Do
basketball players make a lot of money? Yes, they do. But the game brings in
over 2 billion dollars."
practice facility for workouts. When he's gone, Korver typically trains in
Santa Barbara, Calif. He said he planned to invite teammates to join him.
Derrick Rose trains in Santa Monica, Calif., with other NBA stars. Carlos
Boozer is in Miami. Brian Scalabrine, who said he likely would sign in Europe,
hopes the lockout doesn't do permanent damage.
"There has to be a creative way to address the problems," he said by phone. "If
20 percent of my salary were cut, it wouldn't change my life one bit. But at
the same time, I want to support those guys who are fighting for everything
they have."
Thibodeau always preaches taking matters step-by-step. He already conducted
individual exit meetings with players.
"We reviewed the past season, went over things I want them to concentrate on
for next season," Thibodeau said. "If you have the right type of players, you
know they're going to be professional with their offseason conditioning
programs. That's all we're thinking about."
Everyone could be thinking awhile.
"I've always been very impressed with the professionalism of this group of
guys," general manager Gar Forman said, "and their dedication,
conscientiousness and desire to make themselves the best possible players."
