10. Johnny "Red" Kerr, Tilden (Chicago), Class of 1950
Kerr didn't get into basketball until late in his high school career, but he
made up for it over time. He starred at Illinois after high school. He was
drafted No. 5 overall by the Syracuse Nationals in the 1954 draft. He went to
three NBA All-Star Games and averaged 13.8 points and 11.2 rebounds over 12
seasons. He won a title with the Nationals in 1955.
9. Maurice Cheeks, DuSable (Chicago), Class of 1974
Cheeks made his name in the NBA. With just a few options after his high
school career in Chicago, he ended up at West Texas A&M University
and played well enough there to be selected by the Philadelphia 76ers in the
second round of the 1978 draft. He played 11 years with the 76ers and was one
of the league's best defensive players. He was a four-time NBA All-Star. He
also won a title with the 76ers.
8. Dan Issel, Batavia, Class of 1966
Issel starred at Batavia before playing for Adolph Rupp at Kentucky. He
scored 2,138 points in his Kentucky career. He was drafted into the NBA, but
he chose to play in the ABA. He played in six ABA All-Star Games and one
later in the NBA. He also won an ABA title. He averaged 22.6 points and 9.1
rebounds during 15 professional seasons
7. Mark Aguirre, Westinghouse (Chicago), Class of 1978
Aguirre, who was a McDonald's All-American, was a big-time scorer in the
Chicago Public League at Westinghouse, then at DePaul and finally in the NBA.
He was the No. 1 pick in the 1981 draft and went on to have a memorable
13-year pro career. He averaged 20 points in his NBA career, which was spent
mostly with the Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons. He won two NBA titles
with the Pistons while playing with fellow Chicagoan Isiah Thomas.
6. Tim Hardaway, Carver (Chicago), Class of 1984
Hardaway filled up the box score and had a flash to his game. He began his
stardom at Carver. He landed at UTEP, where his crossover was given the
nickname "UTEP two-step." He was a five-time NBA All-Star and
averaged 17.7 points, 8.2 assists and 1.6 steals in his 13-year career.
5. Dwyane Wade, Richards (Oak Lawn), Class of 2000
Wade flew a bit under the radar in high school at Richards and started to
really emerge as a star at Marquette. The Miami Heat took him with the fifth
overall pick in the 2003 draft, and he's been a superstar ever since. He's
been selected to eight All-Star Games, has won two titles, was named the 2006
Finals MVP and has averaged 25 points in his career.
4. George Mikan, Joliet Catholic (Joliet), Class of 1941
Mikan changed basketball due to his size and skills. After graduating from
Joliet Catholic, he attended DePaul and was a two-time national player of the
year. He played seven professional seasons and averaged 23.1 points and 13.4
rebounds in his career. He won five titles with the Minneapolis Lakers and
was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959.
3. Derrick Rose, Simeon (Chicago), Class of 2007
Rose is the latest Chicago product to become an NBA star. Rose, a McDonald's
All-American, won two state championships at Simeon. He was voted Illinois
Mr. Basketball in 2007. In his one year at Memphis, he lost in the national
title game. He was drafted No. 1 overall by the Chicago Bulls in 2008 and
became the youngest MVP in NBA history for the 2010-11 season. He has been
selected to three All-Star Games.
2. Kevin Garnett, Farragut (Chicago), Class of 1995
Garnett played just one high school season in Chicago, but he left a lasting
mark. He and Ronnie Fields teamed together at Farragut for the 1994-95 season
and packed gyms wherever they played. Garnett was a McDonald's All-American
and was named Illinois Mr. Basketball. He entered the NBA draft straight from
high school and was selected No. 5 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He
was the 2003-04 NBA MVP and is a 14-time All-Star selection. He's won one NBA
title.
1. Isiah Thomas, St. Joseph (Westchester), Class of 1979
Thomas is considered one of the greatest point guards ever. A McDonald's
All-American, Thomas starred at St. Joe's and lost in the state championship
game in 1978. He won one NCAA title during his two seasons at Indiana. He was
selected No. 2 overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 1981 draft and went to
12 All-Star Games, won two titles and averaged 19.2 points and 9.3 assists in
his career. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.
