Jun 5 Cubs closer Joe Borowski may have set a franchise record last week
with 22 straight saves, but after blowing two of his last three opportunities,
manager Dusty Baker finally appears to have wavered in his unconditional
support of him. "I'll think about it make a decision," Baker told the Chicago
Tribune.
After failing to keep a 1-0 lead in Mark Prior's season debut on Friday,
Borowski now has an 8.02 ERA.
Views: We've been waiting all season for Borowski's poor pitching to manifest
itself in blown saves, and here we are. Reliever LaTroy Hawkins—who has a 1.47
ERA, a 0.75 WHIP, and more traditional stopper stuff—is waiting in the wings.
Hawkins has 47 career saves, and though he struggled at times with the role
in Minnesota,
the Cubs have fallen 4.5 games behind first place in the NL Central and have
little choice but to make a change.
