Michael Barrett
My favorite Cub is Michael Barrett. It's almost as if
I am proud of him. When the Cubs signed him, I had great
feelings about it. I knew what potential he portrayed,
and what he brought to the field with him every single day.
I was confident he would perform well, and every day he is
making me more "proud" he's a Cub by exceeding my optimistic
expectations. This kid just outright plays baseball. He's
hitting all over the order, and does anything the role
requires of him to do.
And just to put things in perspective, Barrett is even
consistently hitting better than his .297 "average" justifies.
He showed his first signs of struggle in June, and since has
seemed to get a handle of himself again - his average
dismissing June would be .325. But the best part of this kid
is not the big numbers he inevitably puts up - but it's what
he does TO WIN. He's not parading his homerun power, or
"looking for a pitch to crush" - he can play the moneyball,
and he plays the small ball.
He sacrafices himself for the entirety of the ball game,
no matter what the ball game calls for. With runners on,
he's hitting .336; with runners in scoring positions he's
hitting .359 (34 RBIs in 78 at-bats). No one on this team
hits that man at third home, and it's killing this team.
Michael can - he is hitting .462 with a man on third. Oh -
and he strikes out less than any one else on the team!
Everything this team needs is in Michael Barrett...
maybe everyone else needs to watch some tape of their own catcher.
He's the only one on the team consistently exhibiting heart,
and a desire to play. I've never seen him take a selfish at-bat,
the biggest mistakes I've seen him make are those of modesty,
such as showing bunt with a runner at first and no-outs.
He doesn't make excuses, whine, or point fingers.
Every day he's learning, every day he's working harder than
any other player - and every day he is becoming better.
He is the battery of the toughest team in baseball to catch,
and doing a #### fine job. He listens to his pitchers and coaches
and learning how to call a game with an ace on the mound,
and he's doing nothing but dramatically improving defensively.
It's extremely asinine that people are still considering
this a "bad move" by Hendry because he "took too big of a risk".
Finding and molding players like Barrett is exactly
what the best GMs should do. I'm tired of hearing
"SEE? WE HAVE NO OFFENSE, WE SHOULD HAVE GOT PUDGE!". ...
What we should have done is got 8 Michael Barretts.
