CHICAGO -- The Cubs coulbn't find their rally caps on Wednesday night, Rafel Furcal had three hits,including a solo homer, and scored three runs to help Brad Penny win his National League-leading 16th game and lead the Dodgers to a 6-0 won over the Cubs. The Cubs had overcome a seven-run deficit on Tuesday to win, 9-8, in 11 innings despite making six errors, but couldn't muster anything against Penny (16-8), who threw seven shutout innings. He struck out six and served up seven hits. With the win, the Dodgers maintained a 1 1/2-game lead over the Padres in the National League West. "They have a good chance, depending on what kind of pitching they get," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said of the Dodgers. "If they get pitching like they got tonight from Penny -- and they have a heck of a closer in [Takashi] Saito, he's got unbelievable stats -- they've got a good team; they've got good depth." Angel Guzman has good reason to be frustrated. The rookie took the loss, and is now winless in 10 starts. Guzman (0-6) is the sixth Cubs pitcher ever to go winless in his first 10 starts with the team. The longest stretch is 20 starts by Bill Caudill from May 27, 1979, to May 20, 1981. The others include Jim Brewer and Geoff Zahn, who each made 12 starts for the Cubs before their first win; and Willie Hernandez and Dave Hillman, who each made 11. "I haven't been able to go past the fourth inning the last few games," said Guzman, who has given up 22 earned runs over 16 innings in his last four starts. "I'm just trying to do my thing, and I haven't been able to get the job done." In his last start against Atlanta, Guzman was throwing too many pitches down the heart of the plate. Was his location better this time? "It's getting better," Guzman said. "In the last few days, I've been working with [pitching coach Larry Rothschild] in the bullpen, and I feel pretty comfortable today with new stuff with my mechanics. I have to get ready for my next one. Everything starts tonight." The mechanical tweaks aren't too complicated. They're small things, Guzman said. "In the game, they give me good results," he said. "I'm having a tough time right now. I don't want to think too much about it; I just want to be relaxed. I have to be smart about that." Guzman was making the 69th start by a Cubs rookie this year. He gave up five runs on eight hits and four walks over four-plus innings. "He was still off on location some," Baker said of the right-hander. "The pitch to Furcal was supposed to be away, and it was inside. We'll just keep working on location." Jeff Kent hit a bloop RBI single with two outs in the Dodgers' first and Furcal led off the third with his 12th home run -- his second in as many games. Furcal doubled to start the fifth, Kenny Lofton walked and both scored on Nomar Garciaparra's two-run double, which chased Guzman. One out later, Will Ohman intentionally walked Kent, and Wilson Betemit singled to load the bases. Marlon Anderson hit a sacrifice fly and Russell Martin added an RBI single past shortstop Cesar Izturis to take a 6-0 lead. The Cubs dropped to 30 games under .500 at 58-88. "We still have to go out there and do the best we can," said third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who had two hits in the game. "We still have great fans who come to watch us play, and we have to do the best we can. "We play 162 games, and it doesn't matter where we are in the standings. We have to go out there and play the game.
