Hendry likely not done dealing
November 21, 2006
By Jeff Vorva Staff writer
Now that the Cubs have doled out two of the richest contracts in their history
in a nine-day stretch -- to Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano -- is there any
cash left over for a quality pitcher such as Barry Zito or Jason Schmidt?
There might be.
There are rumors flying that the Cubs could extend their 2007 payroll to $120
million or more. General manager Jim Hendry wouldn't talk about specific
payroll numbers Monday, but if the Cubs are serious about turning a last-place
club into a contender, they will give him enough resources to sign a top-level
pitcher.
"Obviously, we didn't go into this without a plan," Hendry said. "I've kept
(interim team president John McDonough) posted on everything. We're still going
to try to pursue the same people we have all along, and, hopefully, by the new
year, we'll have a lot better ballclub."
After Carlos Zambrano and Rich Hill, the Cubs have three spots open in the
starting rotation if Mark Prior (chronic shoulder problems) is not in the mix
to start the season.
"We will need some pitching," Hendry said. "Whether it's through free agency or
potential trades remains to be seen. But it's something that's important over
the next couple of months."
Floyd in mix?
Former Thornwood High School star Cliff Floyd likely will be replaced as the
Mets' left fielder by ex-Cub Moises Alou, who was inked to a one-year deal by
the Mets on Monday. Floyd is on the Cubs' radar as someone who could platoon
with young Matt Murton in left field.
Floyd, who according to rumors was to be traded to the North Siders for Sammy
Sosa after the 2004 season, hit .244 with 11 homers and 44 RBI in 97 games this
year. Because of numerous injuries, the left-handed-hitting Floyd (who turns 34
on Dec. 5) has played in fewer than 114 games in three of the last four
seasons.
"We'll be looking at different options for role players and maybe get a little
stronger from the left side hitting-wise," Hendry said.
Two added to 40-man roster
The Cubs added right-handed pitcher Rocky Cherry and left-handed pitcher Clay
Rapada to the 40-man roster.
Cherry, 27, was 4-1 with a 2.22 ERA in 31 relief appearances with Double-A West
Tenn this year. Rapada in 2006 had 21 saves and a 0.82 ERA for West Tenn and
was promoted to Triple-A Iowa, where he served as a middle reliever and posted
a 3.04 ERA in 28 appearances.
