The fourth and fifth spots figure to be a battle among lefties Tom Gorzelanny(notes) and Sean Marshall(notes) and right-handers Jeff Samardzija(notes) and Carlos Silva(notes), the latter obtained from Seattle in a trade for Bradley. Those final two spots are huge question marks. Righty Carlos Marmol(notes) knows he’s the closer, and the Cubs feel that will help him relax and regain his control. When Marmol’s on, he’s nearly unhittable, but he walked 65 and hit 12 last year. The rest of the bench spots are wide open. The Cubs figure they’re OK either way, with Cashner as a starter or as a reliever. Medical Watch: ‧ LHP Ted Lilly (left shoulder surgery in November 2009) has begun throwing, although not off the mound. Manager Lou Piniella talks of May 1 for Lilly’s return date, but the front office is putting no limits or expectations on when Lilly might come back. ‧ LF Alfonso Soriano (arthroscopic left knee surgery in September 2009) shouldn’t encounter any delays this spring. ‧ 3B Aramis Ramirez (dislocated left shoulder) did not have surgery on the injured shoulder, which cost him two months of the 2009 season and caused him considerable discomfort after he came back.
