CINCINNATI -- Starlin Castro was sleeping when his phone rang at 7 a.m. on
Friday. It was Double-A manager Bill Dancy with the news the 20-year-old
shortstop has been dreaming about.
"The manager called and said, 'You made it to the Majors,' " Castro said. "I
said, 'Are you serious?' I didn't believe it."
The highly touted infielder joined the Cubs on Friday at Great American Ball
Park, and manager Lou Piniella didn't waste any time, inserting him into the
lineup at shortstop against the Reds.
Castro didn't waste any time, either. In his first Major League at-bat, in
the second inning, he launched a 2-2 pitch from the Reds' Homer Bailey into
the right-field seats for his first home run. There were two baserunners on
board at the time.
He's the sixth Cubs player to homer in his first big league at-bat, and the
first since pitcher Jim Bullinger did so on June 8, 1992, at St. Louis.
Castro had called family and friends after getting the news of his callup.
Did they believe him?
"Yeah, maybe," he said. "I don't know."
But despite his youthful appearance, Castro is prepared.
"I'm happy," he said. "I'm ready."
"Let's get his feet wet in the eight-spot and keep him down there," Piniella
said, "and then we can look down the road to see what we'll do."
Castro, who was batting .376 at Double-A Tennessee, looked as though he'd
been with the big league team all season during batting practice, dancing a
little to the BP music and laughing with Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez.
He has the talent. The only question was when he would get the call. After
impressing the team in Spring Training, did he think he would be called up
early or late in the year? Later, Castro said, at times using coach Ivan
DeJesus as interpreter.
He'll wear No. 13, his favorite number. It's much better than No. 67, which
he wore in Spring Training.
The infield at the Reds' home park is definitely better than anything Castro
has seen, either in the Minor Leagues or his native Dominican Republic.
"It's rock [in the Dominican]," he said.
His hair is a little long, and he promised to get a trim next week, when the
Cubs are in Chicago. He is still getting settled. He just turned 20 on March
24.
"This spring, if you didn't know he was 19 years old, you couldn't guess by
his demeanor," Piniella said. "Let's just let him play and let him fit in and
let him gain some experience."
Piniella couldn't imagine being in the big leagues at 20. He made his debut
when he was 21, but that was just one game in 1964.
"It took me a while longer," he said. "The really good young players, they
come up quick. You see what's happening in Major League Baseball now. They're
coming up at a younger age, and they're basically doing a pretty good job.
The really good ones find a way to adjust."
雖然前幾天就又把他拉上來的傳言 不過沒想到這麼快就上來了
結果目前3-2 生涯首安就是全壘打 掃進6分打點
加油!!!小卡~

Do they still play the blues in Chicago
When baseball season rolls around
When the snow melts away
Do the Cubbies still play
In their ivy-covered burial ground
