ST. LOUIS -- Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez dispelled speculation he might
opt out of his contract by telling the Sun-Times on Monday that he will
exercise his $14.6 million player option for 2011 and stay with the Cubs.
Ramirez made a similar assertion in July, but after continuing media
questions over the weekend about his opt-out rights -- and his vague
responses -- he made his intentions clear Monday.
'Yes,'' he said of his plans to return. ''I'm leaning on it.''
Leaning?
''I'm staying here,'' he said. ''Put it that way.''
Of course he is. It would defy sanity to do anything else, given the economic
climate for free agents in recent years and the fact he's coming off
back-to-back seasons compromised by injuries and slumps.
His player option is worth $16.6 million guaranteed, counting the $2 million
buyout on the club's $16 million option for 2012.
''And you can print it: I have confidence in [general manager] Jim
[Hendry],'' Ramirez said. ''He's a smart guy. He's going to turn this
around.''
Ramirez, who had been bothered by a sore quad, returned to the lineup Monday
for the first time since Sept. 5. He doubled in his first at-bat and scored
the first run.
