CHICAGO -- Minor League outfielder Matthew Szczur will represent the Cubs in the 13th annual XM All-Star Futures Game on July 10 at Arizona's Chase Field. Szczur, a baseball and football standout at Villanova, was selected in the fifth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. He started his professional career with a 21-game hit streak, batting .347 with 10 doubles, 10 RBIs and a .414 on-base percentage over 25 games split among the Arizona Rookie League, Low Single-A Boise and Single-A Peoria. So far this year, Szczur is hitting .327 with five home runs, 12 doubles and 24 RBIs in 51 games for Peoria. He is one of five outfielders on the U.S. Team's roster. Szczur, pronounced "Caesar," was a wide receiver and return specialist for Villanova, and led the Wildcats to their first NCAA Football Championship Subdivision title in 2009. In the championship game, Szczur accumulated 270 all-purpose yards and was named Most Outstanding Player. Szczur, 21, decided to give up football in January, when he signed with the Cubs. He is ranked as the No. 8 Cubs' prospect by MLB.com. Eight current Cubs played in past Futures Games: Marlon Byrd (2002), Starlin Castro (2009), Koyie Hill (2004), Lou Montanez (2005), Carlos Pena (2000, 2001), Aramis Ramirez (1999), Alfonso Soriano (1999) and Geovany Soto (2007). The 13th annual Futures Game can be seen live on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday on Taco Bell All-Star Sunday, July 10, at 5 p.m. CT.
