Notes: Tigers acquire Sanchez Lefty-for-lefty trade deals Jon Connolly By Jason Beck / MLB.com DETROIT -- A month after trading their minor league player of the year, the Tig ers dealt their minor league pitcher of the year Thursday, again for a hard-thr owing lefty. Class A starter Jon Connolly is headed to the Cubs along with a pl ayer to be named in exchange for Double-A hurler Felix Sanchez. "Sanchez has a quality arm," president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "H e has a slider that we like. He's quick. He's pretty close to the big leagues. We like this guy a lot." A 22-year-old signed out of the Dominican Republic six years ago, Sanchez has s huttled between starting and relief for the past four years. Working out of the bullpen at Double-A West Tenn, he allowed five runs in 6 2/3 innings but struc k out five batters. He went 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA for West Tenn last year before making his Major League debut in September in his third season in the United St ates. He has struck out 323 batters in 348 career minor league innings. Connolly had a dream season statistically last year at low Class A West Michiga n. His 1.41 ERA led all minor league pitchers, while his 16 wins and five compl ete games tied for the Midwest League lead. He captured national attention with his 12-0 start last year, during which he refused to cut his hair until he los t. He went 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA in four starts for high Class A Lakeland this sp ring. That success, however, did not translate into prospect status. Neither MLB.com nor Baseball America listed Connolly among the Tigers' top prospects, though ML B.com listed him as the organization's Cinderella story. "We like him," Dombrowski said of Connolly, "but it's also a situation where we was down in Lakeland and we still think he's a while away. We have three guys on that staff in [Humberto] Sanchez, [Joel] Zumaya and [Kyle] Sleeth that for u s are appreciably better prospects. He's a soft-tossing guy, not a hard-thrower . "We just think that in our situation that the upside potential on [Felix] Sanch ez is much more than what Connolly's upside potential was. That's for us." In contrast to Connolly's mid-80s fastball, the lanky Sanchez tops out in the m id-90s. He will report Friday to Double-A Erie, where he will initially pitch o ut of the bullpen. "We like him both ways," Dombrowski said. "Some people in the organization thin k he will be a real effective guy out of the bullpen. Other people think he wil l be able to develop a change and be a starter." It's the second consecutive deal the Tigers swung for a prospect on another tea m's 40-man roster. Detroit traded reigning minor league player of the year Cody Ross at the end of Spring Training to the Dodgers for Steve Colyer, who has be come the second left-hander in the Tigers bullpen. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 210.58.248.106
