[情報] Guillen eager to face M's
DETROIT -- Carlos Guillen didn't bring any hatred into his first matchup again
st his old team. It didn't hurt that the pitcher he'd be facing is his best fr
iend.
Freddy Garcia came up with Guillen from Venezuela to the Houston Astros farm s
ystem before heading to Seattle in the Randy Johnson trade. They blossomed int
o prominent roles together on a team that won 116 games three years ago and be
came one of the American League's perennial contenders.
Now they're facing each other.
"He said he's going to hit me," Guillen joked, recounting their telephone conv
ersation earlier this week. "He's still my friend. He's OK."
He's not the only player he knows over there, or the only player he might want
to impress. "I feel pressure the first time I face my old team," he said. "I
know everybody over there. It's going to be fun."
There was no animosity evident from Guillen towards the team that actually tra
ded him twice last season. His deal to Cleveland for Omar Vizquel fell through
when Vizquel failed a physical. Little more than a month later, the Mariners
had an agreement with free agent Rich Aurilia and were determined to trade Gui
llen first. Thus, the Tigers plucked Guillen for Ramon Santiago and minor leag
uer Juan Gonzalez.
Tigers manager Alan Trammell wasn't worried about any love lost between Guille
n and the Mariners, only the experience Guillen gained from his old club. As C
raig Monroe told Trammell earlier this week, Guillen went to the "Edgar school
."
"That's just an example of how he's paying attention," Trammell marveled about
Guillen. "Edgar Martinez is one of the best hitters that we've seen in this e
ra, and really he's one of the best hitters of all time. Really, he's in a cla
ss. And why wouldn't you want to learn from somebody like that? He was taught
well. He doesn't get flustered. He just seems to be under control."
Now, Guillen is doing the same for at least one of the younger Tigers.
"Carlos deserves the credit with Omar [Infante]," Trammell said. "Early in Spr
ing Training I didn't know what was going to happen with Omar, and Omar now to
me, there's room for improvement, but he has improved as far as going about h
is business, observing, doing things, and that's coming from Carlos. Whatever
it takes. But he's talking baseball."
