[傷兵] Notes: Monroe goes on DL
DETROIT -- A day after visiting the Tigers with a friend, Nook Logan was battin
g ninth for them. A day after homering and being booed by fans for not running
out a wild pitch in the same game, Craig Monroe was hobbling to the disabled li
st.
That's how the Tigers' injury bug is working these days. Monroe had been trying
to shake a mild strain in his left hamstring for over a week, but Tuesday's st
ruggles were a sign that it wasn't getting any better. He went on the 15-day DL
Wednesday, leaving Logan to make an afternoon dash up Interstate 75 from Tripl
e-A Toledo for his Major League debut.
It wasn't an easy trip. "My truck hadn't been moved in two weeks, and the batte
ry was dead," said Logan, who still got to Comerica Park in about 45 minutes.
Logan has made a living by getting from one place to another quickly. His 37 st
olen bases this year lead the International League and match his total for all
of 2003 at Double-A Erie. His 12-game hitting streak that ended Tuesday afterno
on had raised his average from .252 to .269.
However, that wasn't the main reason manager Alan Trammell called him up. Monro
e probably won't need the full 15 days to get back into game shape, but the Tig
ers' injury woes -- regular center fielder Alex Sanchez remains on the DL and p
robably won't be activated until early next week -- won't allow them to wait a
week for Monroe to heal.
"We need a center fielder, and I want to play Brandon at third occasionally, an
d Craig's hurt," Trammell said. "He'd probably have to sit out a little while.
"We can't be in a position we were in at Minnesota [two weeks ago, when second
baseman Omar Infante had to play center]. End of story, bottom line."
The fact that Monroe can't fill that role hurts him more than the hamstring. Af
ter sitting the final few games before and after the All-Star break, he returne
d to action and tried to play through the injury.
To a degree, he made a difference, including Tuesday's game-tying two-run homer
in the fourth inning. However, he said he tweaked the hamstring in his next at
-bat when he swung in front of a J.C. Romero.
That was the at-bat when he struck out on a wild pitch, but didn't take off imm
ediately for first base.
"To be honest, after I tweaked, I got scared," he said. "I struck out and I'm l
ike, 'What do I do? Do I try to run hard, or do I just try to be smart and not
make it worse.' Not running hard and the perception of it that Craig Monroe doe
sn't run hard, I haven't been that way ever. The perception was really wrong, a
nd it's hurtful. The fans boo you, and they have no idea how much pain you're g
oing through to try to help your teammates."
Since he hadn't told anybody how much pain he was still in, nobody on the team
knew, either. "I tried to take advantage of an opportunity, and I really think
it worked backwards for me. I wasn't really being smart, I think back now. I sh
ould've said, 'You know what? I'm not able to perform at 100 percent, either.'
I was a bonehead."
