09/13/2004 1:35 PM ET Steve Boros announces retirement Special Assistant to the General Manager to retire after 47 years in baseball DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers today announced Steve Boros, a special assistant to the general manager, will retire effective on January 1, 2005. A veteran of 47 seasons in professional baseball, Boros spent the last nine seasons with the Tigers organization. He served as the organization's minor league field coordinator for his first seven seasons before holding the position of director of player development, and ultimately his final role with the club as special assistant to the general manager. Boros spent parts of seven seasons as an infielder at the major league level with the Tigers (1957-58 and 1961-62), Chicago Cubs (1963) and Cincinnati Reds (1964-65). "It's been a great 47 years and my career has come full circle," Boros said. "My playing career began with the Tigers organization, and I'm retiring as a part of it. This organization is headed towards a bright future and I'm proud to have been a part of it." Boros added, "I look forward to spending time with my wife (Sharla) in Florida and visiting our children and other family members." A native of Flint, MI, Boros spent 12 years with the Kansas City Royals organization, including five seasons as both a minor league manager (1970-74) and major league coach (1975-79). Boros returned to the organization as the Royals third base coach in 1993-94. He joined the Montreal Expos organization as a minor league manager in 1980, before spending two seasons as the club's first base coach (1981-82). Boros managed the Oakland A's in 1983-84, in addition to serving as the San Diego Padres manager in 1986. Additionally, Boros served as a scout (1988-90) and minor league field coordinator (1991-92) for the Los Angeles Dodgers and spent two seasons as the minor league field coordinator for the Padres (1985, 1987). Boros attended the University of Michigan and Flint Northern High School.
