Six Tigers agree to terms
All parties sign one-year contracts with Detroit
DETROIT -- While the Tigers work on wooing Magglio Ordonez, they continue to wo
rk on getting players already on their roster under contract. Six more deals we
re announced Monday, meaning 22 players on Detroit's 40-man roster are signed f
or 2005.
Outfielders Curtis Granderson and Byron Gettis, second baseman Ryan Raburn and
right-handers Roberto Novoa, Fernando Rodney and Mark Woodyard all agreed to te
rms on one-year contracts. All of them were protected on the Tigers roster, mea
ning the club could have eventually renewed their contracts if they were unable
to reach an agreement.
Of those six, Rodney has the best chance of making the Opening Day roster, some
thing he has never done. The former closer missed all of last season recovering
from Tommy John surgery, but he's throwing well enough at this point that coac
hes are expecting him to fill a middle relief role for 2005 and learn behind Ug
ueth Urbina and Troy Percival.
Like Rodney in 2003, Granderson, Novoa and Raburn all made late-season impressi
ons on the Tigers last year after helping lead Double-A Erie to the Eastern Lea
gue playoffs. All three, however, will likely open the season gaining more expe
rience at Triple-A Toledo before they get a chance to crack the Majors full tim
e.
Woodyard earned a spot on the 40-man roster this offseason following an impress
ive season at Erie, where he went from valuable reliever to late-season starter
when injuries depleted the SeaWolves rotation. He posted a 6-4 record and 3.52
ERA in 102 1/3 innings over 43 games, then went 0-1 with a 5.82 ERA over 11 ga
mes in the Arizona Fall League. He, too, is ticketed for Toledo.
Gettis will try to earn a spot as a reserve outfielder for the Tigers, who clai
med him off waivers from the Royals at season's end last year. He batted .257 a
t Triple-A Omaha and .362 for Double-A Wichita in 2004 with six home runs and 3
0 RBIs in 237 at-bats combined at the two levels. He finished among the Puerto
Rican Winter League leaders in hitting this offseason with a .347 average and .
432 on-base percentage in 34 games of action.
