NEW YORK -- Both Fernando Rodney and Joel Zumaya took a significant step
today, as each threw a six-minute bullpen session in Lakeland, Fla.
It was the first true bullpen session for Zumaya since his right shoulder
surgery last October, and it was Rodney's first since his visit with Dr.
James Andrews on April 16.
"Both felt very good,'' said Kevin Rand, the Tigers' head athletic trainer.
"This was a very, very positive day."
The news about Rodney was especially good, because he told the Tigers that
this was his best bullpen session since his right shoulder began to bother
him early in spring training. Rodney has been shut down several times since
then.
"He felt comfortable with his delivery, and he was finishing his pitches,''
Rand said. "He threw with greater intensity.''
If Rodney can avoid any more setbacks, he would move much quicker than
Zumaya. But it's too early to say with much certainty how soon either pitcher
would be ready to return to the Tigers.
Rodney and Zumaya are each scheduled for another bullpen session this
weekend. Rand said that Zumaya will throw Saturday, and that Rodney will
throw Saturday or Sunday, depending on how he feels.
In other news, Jim Leyland said that Dontrelle Willis will make at least two
rehabilitation starts for Triple-A Toledo. Willis makes his first start
Friday night.
