http://0rz.tw/gGDur Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia went to the mound, giving pitcher Kris Benson the list of "do's and don'ts" against one of the game's most feared hitters. Suffice to say, the first "don't" was grooving a modest fastball down the middle of the plate for the first pitch. You don't offer a hungry Tiger red meat. Cabrera pounced, and his rocket launch over the wall in deep centerfield cut through the skepticism greeting the Tigers on their home opener Friday. "It's important that we give (the fans) something to feel good about at the start," said Cabrera following his third career six-RBI game. It's important because all isn't forgiven for last season. Detroit's still holding a grudge against the Tigers. Fans can't completely forget how decisively they gave their hearts and shrinking disposable household income last year to what most logically assumed was a World Series contender. Their reward for such a commitment was an 0-7 start that multiplied into a last-place season that was arguably more emotionally destructive than the Lions' winless campaign. Few are as trusting entering this season. There's an overemphasis on president/general manager Dave Dombrowski's failed decisions over the past two years, but the Tigers' 15-2 rout of the Rangers highlighted moves that spur high praise. Armando Galarraga's ascent from obscurity at this time a year ago keeps soaring at the speed of Cabrera's grand slam. And if the soon-to-be-26-years-old Cabrera becomes a legitimate Triple Crown threat as Houston Astros skipper Cecil Cooper suggested during spring training a year ago, then who really cares if Dontrelle Willis throws another pitch for the Tigers? Instead of crying about the $22 million the Tigers owe Willis through 2010, just tack that price tag onto the seven-year, $153-million contract extension Cabrera signed soon after his arrival last year. Think of it as the Tigers paying Cabrera $175 million instead. If Friday was an indication of how Cabrera might produce now that he's comfortable in the American League, then that $175 million becomes a bargain.
