Brandon Lyon made it clear that he was looking for a long-term home. His
agent hoped to secure a two-year deal for the former closer's services, a
term the Tigers were unlikely to give him.
As it turns out, Lyon was able to get more than he might have thought
possible. According to sources, the Houston Astros have signed Lyon to a
three-year, $15 million deal.
December 10, MLB.com: Right-hander Brandon Lyon, who has saved 54 games in
eight seasons in the Major Leagues with Toronto, Boston, Arizona and Detroit,
has reached a three-year agreement with the Astros, according to a baseball
source. The deal is pending a physical.
Lyon went 6-5 with three saves in 65 games last season for Detroit and saved
26 games and had a 4.70 ERA in 2008 with Arizona. In 374 career games, Lyon
is 27-34 with a 4.20 ERA. He posted a 1.56 ERA after June last season in the
role as setup man for Fernando Rodney.
After SI.com's Jon Heyman reported that Lyon's three-year deal was worth $15
million, it caused his colleague, and NFL writer, Peter King to exclaim "and
I thought Mack Brown was overpaid."
With the Tigers also likely to lose Fernando Rodney in free agency, to
perhaps the Philadelphia Phillies, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski
likely has some work to do, to once again re-tool the Tigers bullpen.
