Chris Gimenez on Thursday will become the seventh Rangers’ catcher to work
with Darvish. Unlike the others, he did not have the advantage of catching him
during spring training. Gimenez spent the spring with Oakland, joining the
Rangers on March 28 through a waiver claim.
To compensate, Gimenez watched videos of Darvish’s last two starts during the
team’s evening flight to Detroit. Gimenez also planned to get together with
Darvish for a discussion on what he wants of a catcher.

“I want to try to be on the same page as much as I can,” Gimenez said. “That
’s the most difficult part of not ever catching guys before, and then you’re
in the fire. We’ll make due.”
Darvish has not clicked with Robinson Chirinos, the front-line catcher. In
three starts with Chirinos, Darvish is 0-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 171/3 innings.

Darvish had more success with J.P. Arencibia, going 3-1 with a 1.22 ERA in 37
innings. The Rangers demoted Arencibia on Tuesday, sending him to Triple-A
Round Rock on an outright assignment.
“You have to make adjustments,” said Darvish, speaking through an
interpreter. “This is something we have to talk about.”
