13th February 2003 -- Depor's coach has been in the news a lot lately because
the team's last results haven’t been good and several players are
criticising Jabo's methods. The coach responded earlier this week on several
topics, and here's a summary of what he said.
Q: What was the substitution of Makaay all about on Sunday?
A: In the first half we missed something extra in this match against Osasuna
and in the break I thought about bringing in Lionel Scaloni to have more
strength at the right flank with Sergio moving to the centre. I also thought
about substituting Diego because he already had received one yellow card.
But everything changed quickly after the break as Osasuna took the lead. I
decided to bring in Luque but then Tristan was sent off and I noticed we had
troubles in midfield. I tried to solve them with Capdevila, as he already
had rescued us against Alaves and Lens. Of course I know that Makaay is a
much better goalscorer, but sometimes a fresh player can bring surprises.
Q: But you only made the substitution with some minutes to play.
A: Well, between the goal we scored and the moment of the substitution we
had some very bad moments.
Q: It’s like you were satisfied with a draw.
A: No, I always want to win, but also I want to avoid teams beating us.
But Osasuna had 11 players and not us.
Q: Anyway, you knew that this substitution would not make you very popular...
A: I imagined it, but I did not think the reaction would be as intense it
is. I am also surprised that people now only speak about this substitution.
Why doesn’t the press say something like "Capdevila hit the post as
Deportivo almost won this match despite being a man down?"
Q: The other thing is more interesting...
A: Of course it is, but I also was not fast enough with substituting Tristan.
Q: What do you think about the words of Luque and Makaay about last Sunday?
A: I don’t like to restrict my players' words. But my personal opinion is
closer to the one of Mauro Silva, because he represents the team much more.
He’s more objective.
Q: Now you have said that the supporters should not worry too much about
you being the coach of Deportivo. It seems like you’re saying goodbye.
A: I want to to go from match to match and my target is to bring Deportivo
in the Champions League again, for the fourth time in a row.
Q: Don’t you think that your time at Depor is over?
A: Deportivo have clear targets and are still alive in three competitions.
Let’s see how far we get in them. All the other things are pure fiction.
Q: But the team is not responding as it used to do.
A: One cannot say this. We have had many injuries and we’re now where other
teams could not come to.
Q: That’s true, but it seems that Deportivo don’t progress anymore.
A: That’s difficult because we’re already at a very high level. What do
people ask from us? To win the Liga with ten points advantage to the second
placed team, and besides this the Champions League and the Copa del Rey?
We have played good and bad matches this season.
Q: When will Valeron return?
A: I don’t know, he’s training with the group now. But let’s not expect
him to be on top form on the first day of his return.
Q: What would the results have been if you have had Valeron available?
A: That’s impossible to know. But the last seasons we always have kept our
heads high in all competitions and that’s very difficult to achieve. Take
a look at Leverkusen now and their team of last season. They’re fighting
against relegation now. And what about Leeds United? They were in the
Champions League Semi Finals two seasons ago.
