NYON, Switzerland (AP) -- Europe's soccer governing said Thursday it was
fining Italy's Juventus and FC Basel of Switzerland for crowd trouble at a
Champions League match between the two clubs three months ago.
UEFA said its control and disciplinary body had ordered the Italian club to
pay 20,000 Swiss francs (US$15,000) after fans threw fireworks during the
game in Turin on Dec. 11. The panel also criticized the lack of organization
surrounding the game, which ended in a 4-0 victory for Juventus.
Basel was fined the same sum for fan behavior during the match.
The UEFA panel also fined Greek club Thessaloniki and Slavia Prague of the
Czech Republic 20,000 francs (US$15,000) each for crowd trouble during their
Dec. 12 UEFA Cup match.
Boavista of Portugal was fined 15,000 francs (US$11,000) for disturbances
during a Feb. 27 UEFA Cup match against Germany's Hertha Berlin. The German
club was ordered to pay 3,000 francs (US$2,200) for improper team conduct
during the same game.
UEFA also fined a dozen other clubs sums from 1,000-10,000 Swiss francs
(US$750-7,500) for a range of crowd and organization offenses surrounding
Champions League and UEFA Cup matches.
All clubs have until midnight Sunday to appeal the decisions, UEFA said.
