PREVIEW: DEPORTIVO - RAYO (PRIMERA DIVISION, 20h45)
15th March 2003 -- Deportivo will hope to continue their good league form and
to cure their European wounds after very bad luck against Juventus. Rayo
Vallecano though are fighting against relegation and achieved a win against
Celta in the last round.
The possibility of reappearance of Jose Francisco Molina in the goal, the
false suspension of central defender Cesar Martin and the probable loss of
captain Francisco Gonzalez, Fran by injury are the things that can influence
the Galician team.
The team will now only concentrate on La Liga after being eliminated from
other two competitions, that's the reason why adding three points from the
Rayo match is fundamental for arriving to Santiago Bernabeu next weekend with
confidence.
According to the tests of Javier Irureta, Molina's appearance in the first
team seems safe, he also already occupied the bench at Delle Alpi on Wednesday
in Champions League.
The Valencian goalkeeper played his last official match in October 6, 2002
against Racing de Santander, in the fifth matchday of the current league
championship. He joined training this year's January 20 after attending
chemotherapy in the Instituto Oncologico Valenciano where his testicular
cancer was treated.
Rayo Vallecano are conscious that they'll have to score in Riazor which they
are hoping for, after their win against UEFA cup candidates, 5th placed Celta
that ended their three match losing streak in the league.
Three points from a safe spot in La Liga, coach Gustavo Benitez, has lost
many matches because of their line of defence, something that Deportivo have
to take advantage of today.
